The Aceraceae |
The Aceraceae (Maple Family) count some hundred and twenty species of trees and shrubs. A common character is that the leaves are opposite. The most important genus is Acer. |

The family is closely related to Sapindaceae, and (together with Hippocastanaceae) is included into that family by several taxonomists. However, all evidence so far shows both Aceraceae and Hippocastanaceae to be monophyletic: they could be kept separate without ill effects to Sapindaceae. It is a matter of taxonomic style. |
