PKR.com (also PKR) is a UK-based[2] online poker site that features unique 3D graphics and player animation. Through the use of ‘Emote Control’ technology it claims to “bring the personality into online poker”.[3]

History

Founded in 2004 by Jez San, the first person to receive an OBE for services to the computer game industry, PKR.com uses real time 3D graphics to allow users to develop realistic avatars and express themselves at the table through moods, character emotes, chip tricks and poker tells.[2] PKR asserts that these features help players to interact better and engage in the psychological battles traditionally experienced in the live poker arena.

After two years of development, PKR.com officially launched for real money gaming in August 2006, taking the decision to stay out of the US market following the passing of the UIGEA (Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act).[2]

Despite not being able to tap into the world’s largest online poker market, PKR.com has still gone on to become one of the world’s fastest growing poker rooms and is currently ranked as 15th largest online poker site, surpassing more established names in the industry such as Betfair and Ladbrokes. [4]

As of January 2009 the site claims to have registered 2.4 million users, consistently achieving over 15,000 concurrent players daily.[5]

Game selection

In terms of games, PKR.com offers Texas Hold’em and Omaha with a range of scheduled tournaments; Sit &Go’s and ring games available to play for various stakes. The flagship tournament on the site is the monthly ‘PKR Masters’ a No Limit Hold’em event carrying a prize pool of over $100,000. There are also seasonal festivals throughout the calendar and a selection of play money offerings to cater for the non-gambling market.[6]

PKR.com has a reputation in the industry for having softer games due to the high volumes of recreational poker players it attracts. Statistically however, the site has one of the highest player retention levels in the industry due to a large amount of focus placed on community and the social aspects of the game. [7]

Recognition

The notable of success of the site since conception has been recognised inside and out of the industry: A Hitwise award was presented for recording the most online visits of any online poker room in the UK for the first quarter of 2008.[8] The site also went on to win the eGaming Review award for Hotshot Operator of the Year, at the tail end of the same year while finishing runner up in the Poker Operator of the Year category.[9] In total PKR.com has been nominated for nine EGR industry awards in two years, winning two of them.[9] At present the site remains an independent operator, licensed by the Alderney Gambling Control Commission (AGCC), with all operational elements undertaken in-house.

Other projects

In 2008 PKR.com started production of PKR TV which saw nightly televising of some of the more popular weekly tournaments and giving everyday online players the opportunity to become stars via their 3D avatars. The show features on television channels across Europe and YouTube with a full archive of episodes available on a dedicated web channel – PKR.tv.

PKR.com also teamed up with publishing house Dennis Publishing in 2008 to develop Stacked, a quarterly magazine reserved for members of the site as part of a unique loyalty scheme, with eventual release to members of the general public via an online digital version.

Other products

PKR.com also offers a casino via the Playtech platform at www.pkrcasino.com.

It has also teamed up with leading entertainment group Endemol to produce a fully licensed 3D version of the hit game show Deal or No Deal. The game features a digitised version of UK presenter Noel Edmonds.
