Shahpura is a city and a municipality in Bhilwara district in the Indian state of Rajasthan.

Geography

Shahpura is located at 25°38′N 74°56′E / 25.63°N 74.93°E / 25.63; 74.93[1]. It has an average elevation of 364 metres (1194 feet).

Demographics

As of 2001 India census[2], Shahpura had a population of 27,698. Males constitute 51% of the population and females 49%. Shahpura has an average literacy rate of 61%, higher than the national average of 59.5%: male literacy is 72%, and female literacy is 50%. In Shahpura, 16% of the population is under 6 years of age.

History

The rulers of the erstwhile chiefship of Shahpura belonged to the Sisodia (Ranawat) clan of Rajputs .

It has its own flag and currency.

Shahpura has produced many freedom fighters. The Barahat Family of Shahpura has produced three main freedom fighters. One of them is Pratap Singh Baharat . sampat singh also a congress freedom fighter

Economy

As it was not having rocky land and due to a water shortage, it wasn't attractive for industrialists. Industries moved away from it to Bhilwara, as it had rocky land structure and rivers around.Later on Bhilwara developed and became a district of Rajasthan State. But Shahpura still has its cultural and heritage identity.

Ram Snehi

The Biggest and most popular Ramdwara of Shahpura.

Shahpura is a place of pilgrimage for the followers of the Ram Snehi sect. Founded in 1804 they have a shrine in the town called Ramdwara. The chief priest there is the head of the sect. Pilgrims from all over the world visit the shrine throughout the year. Shahpura is well known for Ram Snehi's Ramdwara.
