Iztok Mlakar (born 21 june 1961 in Postojna) is a Slovenian singer, chansonnier and theatre actor.

In the year 1986 he graduated from drama play on AGRFT in Ljubljana. As an actor he is working in Slovenian national theatre in Nova Gorica[1]. He is an author of many songs for theatre plays, but he is best known as an author and a singer of his own songs of chanson style. In the year 1993 he received Ježek's award. Iztok Mlakar and Adi Smolar are Slovenian most famous chansonniers in the last decade.

Chansons

Iztok Mlakar is known to Slovenian public as a chansonnier with witty chansons. In his chansons he sings about always actual themes, like love, passing and death and also about life joys (wine, good food) and the fight of a little man about fairness. In his songs we notice many elements of socialistic government from the 80s years, from former Yugoslavian republic, which are presented in a witty way. Iztok doesn't sing in proper Slovenian grammar. Most of his songs are sung in a dialect ( Gorica's dialect), and some of them also in a Cerkljan's dialect ("Pubi, usidma se", "Var'se, čeča", "Očenaš"). Dialect gives his songs a special home tone. Even that his songs are sung in a dilect, he presents in them a typical Slovenian character. Iztok sings about a simple Slovenian man, which opposes world wars, wishes of a big nations and other topics about bad luck.

Public acts

His public acts are mainly done in front of smaller groups, becouse Iztok doesn't like to sing on big concerts in front of the public. His acts aren't frequent and usually there is a high interest in them, so the tickets are hard to get by. Such style of his acts usually goes well with topics of his songs. With a good food and wine, the audience gets in a good domestic mood, and participates in singing his songs.
