Ryan Bennett (born March 6 1990, Orsett) is an English football player, who plays as a defender for Grimsby Town.

Club career

Grimsby Town

Bennett made the move north to Grimsby Town after being released by Ipswich Town as a youngster and made his debut as an 88th minute substitute in a 2–1 win against MK Dons in April 2007.[1] He became the club's youngest ever captain aged 17 against Lincoln City 21 days later when John McDermott passed him the armband after being substituted.

In the summer of 2007 Bennett was handed the number 5 shirt, previously worn by such luminaries as Tony Crane and Ben Futcher. He scored his first goal in professional football on the opening day of the 2007–08 season when his header from six yards opened the scoring in the 1–1 draw with Notts County at Blundell Park.[2]. With the appointment of Mike Newell as manager in October 2008, Bennett was handed the captains arm band aged only 18, for the rest of the season as club-captain Matthew Heywood was dropped following disappointing performances. Coupled with the partnership of Rob Atkinson, Bennett was ever present for the club in the 2008/2009 season. Ryan won the PFA Player of the Month for February, following his performances for the club in a heavy relegation battle. The 19 year old swept the board at the GTFC Player of the Year ceremony, claiming the Supporters Player of the Year award, as well as many others.

International career

England Under 18's

Bennett was called up for the England Under 18s side that faced Austria at Victoria Park on the 16th of April. It was his first England call-up. He played the full game in the 2–0 victory.[3]
