BEARSPACE began as a project space in a previous public house ‘The Brown Bear’ on Deptford High Street in London. The gallery originally started from a belief in the potential of Deptford as an arts destination and the enormous degree of artistic talent and self motivation of artists in South East London. |

Since that time the gallery and area has grown into a vibrant hotbed of activity. BEARSPACE artists are selected for their response to contemporary culture, philosophy, with a conceptual and narrative framework to their work. BEARSPACE is directed by curator Julia Alvarez. Alvarez studied Visual Culture at Goldsmiths College and continued to work with both Matt's Gallery and Hales Gallery after graduation, before starting BEARSPACE. Julia Alvarez has curated many prestigeous exhibitions including 'Play' a retrospective of play in contemporary art, including artists Jake & Dinos Chapman, Bob & Roberta Smith, Sarah Baker, Doug Fishbone and Anya Gallaccio. In 2008 Alvarez was chief curator for the tenth anniversary of Deptford X, entitled 'Ghost Trade and the Spectre of Change.' This programme included artists Yinka Shonibare, Tomoko Takahashi, Matt Stokes, Bob & Roberta Smith and organisations Pilot and Collecting Live Art. |
