After placing first runner-up at Miss California USA 1982, Hayek won Miss California USA 1983 title. She represented California in the Miss USA 1983 pageant held in Knoxville, Tennessee in May 1983, and became her state's fourth Miss USA titleholder.

Hayek went on to be the 1st runner-up at the Miss Universe 1983 pageant, held at Kiel Auditorium in St. Louis, Missouri. The pageant was won by Lorraine Downes of New Zealand. Hayek had the highest score in the preliminary competition and won both the swimsuit and the evening gown competitions during the final competition.

Hayek is now a trained actress and has starred in successful shows such as Dallas, Twin Peaks and As the World Turns. In addition, for one season she was the co-host of Break the Bank '85.
