The Human Centipede (First Sequence) is a 2009 horror film directed by Tom Six.[1]

Plot

Two pretty American girls are on a road trip through Europe. In Germany, they end up alone at night with a broken car in the woods. They search for help and find an isolated villa. The next day they awake to find themselves trapped in the owner's terrifying makeshift basement hospital along with a Japanese man. The owner, an older German man, identifies himself as a retired surgeon specialized in separating Siamese twins. However his three "patients" are not about to be separated, but joined together via their gastric system in a horrific operation, bringing his sick lifetime fantasy "the human centipede" to life.

Production

Casting for the film initially took place in New York, with filming being undertaken in the Netherlands.[2] Having acted and written for a number of films and TV shows previously[3] Akihiro Kitamuro was a relatively experienced cast member compared with Ashlynn Yennie and Ashley C. Williams, for whom the feature was a first major film role. The actors were not presented with a completed script prior to signing onto the film, instead only being given an outline of the films storyboard.[4] Throughout the production process Tom Six stated his intention to create a film that was '100% medically accurate'[5], consulting a real-life surgeon during the creation and filming process.[6]

Cast

  • Akihiro Kitamura as Katsuro[7]
  • Dieter Laser as Dr.Heiter[8]
  • Andreas Leupold as Det. Kranz[9]
  • Ashley C. Williams as Lindsay[10]
  • Ashlynn Yennie as Jenny[11]

Promotion and release

The Human Centipede has as of November 2009 not been confirmed for a full cinematic or DVD release, however, the film was included in several film festivals around the world, including the 2009 London FrightFest Film Festival,[12] Leeds International Film Festival,[13] Sitges Film Festival[14] and Screamfest Horror Film Festival.[15]

Reception

The Human Centipede has only received a small number of reviews, mostly confined to horror film blogs, based upon it's showings at a number of film festivals. Rotten Tomatoes has (as of November 2009) only collected two reviews for the film (thus not enough as to assign a fresh/rotten rating); one broadly positive and one negative.[16] FEARnet gave the film a positive review, stating that it was 'a horror import that actually has the confidence and audacity to deliver something disturbingly different.'[17] Whilst, Cinematic stated that, whilst a potential cult film, 'all in all it's really not a very good film.'[18]

Among more mainstream publications, only Total Film has published a review of the film, describing the film as a 'disappointment' which 'proved itself to be a slow-moving, repetitive affair that has nowhere left to go by the hour mark.'[19]

Honours

The film has been awarded the following, following entry at various international film festivals:

  • 2009: Fantastic Fest, Austin TX - Best picture[20] and Best Actor (Dieter Laser)[21]in the horror category.
  • 2009: Best Movie at Screamfest LA [22]
  • 2009: Best Movie at Sainte Maxime International Horror Film Festival[23]
  • 2009: Best Movie at Ravenna Nightmare Film Festival[24]

Sequel

On 19 October 2009 it was announced that "The Human Centipede II - The Full Sequence" has been planned to run in cinemas in 2010. 'Full Sequence' will supposedly include a centipede comprised of twelve individuals.[25]
