The 2009–10 season will be Birmingham City's sixth season in the Premier League, and their 56th in the first tier of English football. The side will be managed by former Scotland manager Alex McLeish, who successfully guided the side to promotion from the Championship the previous season.

League Cup

Birmingham entered the 2009–10 Football League Cup in the second round. The draw saw the side travel down to the south coast to play League One side Southampton.[1] This was the second time in two seasons that the two sides had been paired together in this round.[1] Goals from midfielders Lee Carsley and Lee Bowyer cancelled out Adam Lallana's strike to see Birmingham progress to the next round 2–1.[2]

The third round draw saw the team travel to fellow Premier League side Sunderland.[3] An early goal from Jordan Henderson and a strike by Fraizer Campbell mid-way through the first half was enough to see Birmingham knocked out of the cup 2–0.[4]

Off the field

Notable signings

Carson Yeung's takeover

Following his unsuccessful attempt to purchase the club during the 2007–08 season, Carson Yeung returned to complete a deal to purchase Birmingham City.

On the 20 August, Carson Yeung's Grandtop International played a deposit of £3million ahead of a new proposed takeover bid.[5] This was quickly followed by Yeung's decision to donate £5million for the purchase of Middlesbrough's Tuncay, but owing to the rules of the Hong Kong stock market, the money could not be donated to the club, and the player signed for Stoke City.[6]

By the 9 September, the takeover bid had been had a minor setback, pushing the takeover date back from October to mid-November. This was because and EGM had to be held by Grandtop International, owing to the fact that Carson Yeung had to gain permission from backers to issue 50% more shares in the company following his capture of a £57million bridging loan to purchase the club.[7]

On the 15 September, Yeung formally lodged his takeover bid by issuing a £1 per share offer to shareholders.[8] By the 24 September, he had managed to acquire 81.7% of the club, which included former major shareholders David Sullivan, David Gold and Ralph Gold's shares,[9] and by the 06 October, he had completed his takeover after acquiring over 90% of the clubs shares.[10]

A press conference was held at St Andrews on the 15 October, so that Carson Yeung could outline his future plans for the club. During the press conference, Yeung also confirmed a series of new boardroom appointments including, Michael Wiseman as Vice President, Vico Hui as Chairman, Peter Pannu and Sammy Yu as joint Vice Chairman's, and Michael Dunford as Chief Executive.[11]

Following his takeover, Yeung changed the name of Grandtop International to Birmingham International Holdings.[12]

Transfer notes

1 . It is believed that the fee paid for Scott Dann is in the region of £3.5million.[26]
2 . Birmingham City did not mention an official cost for Giovanny Espinoza. Newspaper reports suggest that the fee was lower than €600,000 (£375,000).[27]
3 . A fee, and personal terms for Benítez were agreeded on the 3 June 2009,[28] but were later renegotiated after a problem with Benítez knee was descovered during his medical.[29] Benítez officially joined the club on 7 July 2009.[30] The fee for Benítez is thought to be $2million (about £1.2million) rising to $12.5million (about £7.75million) with add-ons, and also includes a 'get out' clause that will see him return to Mexico at the end of the season if his knee problem becomes serious.[29]
4 . It was announced on 15 May 2009 that Artur Krysiak would be released from the club when his contract expired on 30 June 2009.[31] It was later announced that the side had re-signed the polish goalkeeper.[32]
5 . Radhi Jaidi, Stephen Kelly and Mehdi Nafti all left the club when their contracts expired. Kelly joined Fulham,[33] while Nafti joined Greek side Aris Thessaloniki.[34] Jaidi signed for Southampton on 2 September 2009.[35]
6 . Robin Shroot was originally loaned out to Burton Albion for the season, but was later cancelled, with the player returning to Birmingham on 1 January.[36]
7 . Artur Krysiak's loan deal with Burton Albion was originally a one month loan deal. This was extended until January on the 1 September.[37] The deal was further extended on the 24 December to cover the remanded of the season.[38]
8 . Jordan Mutch's loan deal to Hereford United, and later to Doncaster Rovers were both Football League Youth Loans. This means he will still be eligible for Birmingham City reserve and academy fixtures, but Hereford/Doncaster fixtures will take priority if on the same day.[39][40]
