Shiny Toy Guns

Shiny Toy Guns is a American synthpop/electroclash[1] act originally from Shawnee, Oklahoma, that formed in 2002 in Los Angeles, California. They released their first studio album We Are Pilots in 2006[2], after recording it two previous times. It featured three singles that peaked inside the top 30 in the Alternative Songs charts[citation needed]. It was nominated for a Grammy Award.[1] Their second album Season of Poison was released in 2008[citation needed] and has featured two singles that peaked inside the top 30 in the Alternative Songs.[citation needed]

History

2001–2006: Formation and We Are Pilots

The band was founded in 2001 by bassist and keyboardist, Jeremy Dawson, and vocalist and guitarist, Chad Petree. Both had known each other for years growing up in Shawnee, Oklahoma and worked together on previous music projects such as Cloud2Ground and Slyder.[3] After these projects, they went underground for a brief time, but continued making music together until enlisting vocalist Ursula Vari. During 2004 while in Los Angeles, the band parted with Vari and hired Carah Faye Charnow as their new second vocalist, as well as drummer Mikey Martin.

Shiny Toy Guns gained popularity in California and via their internet networking through their MySpace page. In January 2005, they released their first album We Are Pilots through the record company Stormwest International.[citation needed] That summer they toured across the United States in support of their album. We Are Pilots was re-recorded and re-released with a revised track list through record company SideCho in November 2005.[citation needed] Continuing to tour extensively, the band signed with Universal Records in June 2006 and released a third, final version of We Are Pilots on October 17, 2006.[4]

"Le Disko", "You Are the One", and "Rainy Monday" were the singles for this album.

2007–2008: Season of Poison, changes, and other projects

On October 29, 2007, the band appeared as "The Shinys" on the children's television series Yo Gabba Gabba!.[5] They performed a sequence called The House of Spooks. We Are Pilots received a Grammy Award nomination on December 6, 2007 in the category of Best Electronic/Dance Album, but lost to The Chemical Brothers.[6]

In August 2008, it was revealed that Carah Faye Charnow was no longer a member of the band and was replaced by Sisely Treasure,[citation needed] whose vocals are featured on the band's second album, Season of Poison. Carah Faye Charnow went on to pursue her new band Versant in Sweden.[7] Season of Poison was released through Universal Records on November 4, 2008.[8]

On September 2, 2008, "Ricochet!" was released as the first single from Season of Poison. It hit #17 on the Modern Rock charts[9], which is the highest the band has ever reached with a single on the Modern Rock chart. Shiny Toy Guns released their second Season of Poison single on January 30, 2009; "Ghost Town" peaked at #26 on the Alternative Songs chart.[citation needed]

2009–present: Girls Le Disko and other projects

Shiny Toy Guns were busy with several projects during the Spring 2009. In February, the band introduced their own Fancorps Street Team as a way for their fans to become more involved with the band. [10] In March, the band released their first animated video for their single, "Ghost Town".[11] The animation was completed by well known illustrator, Glen Hanson.[12]

At the end of March 2009, the band performed a cover of Peter Schilling's "Major Tom (Coming Home)". Initially used in a television commercial for the 2010 Lincoln MKZ[13], the song was released as a single on May 5, 2009.[14] In September, the band covered Blue Öyster Cult's "Burnin' for You" for another Lincoln commercial advertising the 2010 Lincoln MKS.[15]

On December 15, 2009, the remix album Girls Le Disko was released on Ultra Records.[16] Near the end of January, Rocketship 2010 was released.[17]

Also, near the end of January, Shiny Toy Gun teamed up with Lincoln again. A new music video for Major Tom was released featuring a live recording that includes both, Chad and Sisely vocals.[18]

In the Spring or Summer of 2010, Shiny Toy Guns will be releasing an LP tentatively named "III".[19] More details have yet to be announced.
