Biography

Hazrat Thameem bin Ahmad Al-Ansari(rah), was born in Medina and belonged to the tribe of Al-Kajraj. He is among the honourable 313 Sahabas who participated in Battle of Badr. Upon receiving instruction from Prophet Muhammad (pbuh), he went to the world of Jinns (A'lam-ul-Jinn) to teach Jinns about Islam for five years. Before his visit to A'lam-ul-Jinn, the Holy Prophet(pbuh) presented him with a holy ring which was bearing "Asma-ul-Zalzalooth" and was said that it would be on his holy finger till the day of Qayamath, when he meets the Holy Prophet(pbuh) in Mahshar Maidhan.

He visited Asia continent during the time of Caliph Hazrat Umar Farook (rah) . Hazrat Thameemul Ansari had immense following and influence in the kingdom of Sindh where he stayed for 18 years. Before his death, instructed his disciples to cast his remains into the sea. Upon his death approximately 900 years ago, his disciples fulfilled his wish.

Just like the biographies of saints tend to be diverse in accounts, there are two prevailing accounts to how the shrine came about. According to some accounts, it is said that the sacred body was in the sea for about 5 years and it was guarded by the big fishes during this time. Eventually, one big fish brought it nearer to sea shore of Kovalam.

On the other hand, according to some accounts, the Nawab of Wallajah, Nawab Muhammed Saadatullah Khan, had a dream in which Hazrat Thameemul Ansari(rah) requested him to proceed to Kovalam, where he would find the latter's remains on Kovalam beach, and asked him to bury it there. When the Nawab reached the beach, he found exactly what he was told and along with some documents, which proved that the identity. The Nawab duly buried the sacred body and built a Dargah (shrine) at the site.

Many devotees visit the shrine of this saint for Ziarah out of respect for this person they believe saw the Prophet Muhammad in his lifetime. Others come requesting intercession of the saint.[1]
