"Speechless" is a song by American recording artist and song-writer Michael Jackson that is featured on his tenth, and final, studio album Invincible, which was released in 2001. The track was written and produced by Jackson; Jackson stated that his inspiration for "Speechless" came after having a water-balloon fight with his children.[1][2] The song is a love ballad that lyrically pertains to being in love. The song was released as a promotion single in 2001 with an alternative version of the album's lead single "You Rock My World" as its b-side.
Background
"Speechless" was recorded from 2000 to 2001 in Los Angeles and was written and produced by recording artist Michael Jackson for his tenth, and final, studio album Invincible, which was released in 2001 by Epic Records.[3] In a 2002 interview with the magazine Vibe, Jackson commented on his inspiration for writing the song,
You'll be surprised. I was with these kids in Germany, and we had a big water-balloon fight - I'm serious - and I was so happy after the fight that I ran upstairs in their house and wrote "Speechless". Fun inspires me. I hate to say that, because it's such a romantic song. But it was the fight that did it. I was happy, and I wrote it in it's entirety right there. I felt it would be good enough for the album. Out of the bliss comes magic, wonderment, and creativity.[4]
"Speechless" is a love ballad with lyrics that pertain to being in love.[5] that is credited as having R&B, pop and soul music genres. The song starts in the key of Bb major and Jackson's voice range is from F4 to B5.[6] According to the sheet music published at Musicnotes.com by Alfred Publishing Co. Inc, the track is set in the time signature of common time and the song has a tempo, described as being "freely", that is 80 beats per minute.[6] The song opens with lyrics describing his feeling of being in love, "Your love is magical; that's how I feel".[6]
