Biography

Peter Munch, originally from Denmark, has been DJing since 1993. His passion for music began with classical training. Munch began serious piano lessons at age 13, and by age 15 taught himself drums, bass, guitar and the harmonica. Munch started playing jazz, pop, soul, rock n roll, and even heavy metal - he basically loved to experiment in all sounds. Munch had always been interested in electronics and by the time he built his own home studio at 18 he was on his way to creating the sound he was meant to play. When Munch began DJing at 18 and travelling the world, his hunger for finding and creating the Cosmopolitan Sound was born. This need brought him to the far corners of the earth, from underground clubs in Tokyo to outdoor raves in Peru. Since 2001 Munch has played residencies at clubs in Denmark such as Konrad, Ketchup and Supergeil. Munch has also been an active organizer of big events and parties in Copenhagen. He has brought together such acts as Trentemøller, Audiofly and Café del Mar.

In the middle of 2005 Munch moved his studio and began a new career in New York City. He wanted to learn from the great DJs: Francois K (who co-founded Body & Soul) and David Mancuso (founder of the legendary NYC party “The Loft”, and DJ at Studio 54), who Munch enjoys a close mentorship with. Within the last year Munch has focused on DJing in New York City and producing music in his studio. He has released over 13 EPs and worked on half dozen remixes, always finding the balance between the organic and the electronic sound, thus enforcing the Cosmopolitan Sound he is known for. His music continues to be influenced by such classic greats as The Doors, the funk of Larry Graham, Stevie Wonder, and Prince, while incorporating new electronic sounds from his world travels such as the English barfight sound, the experimental Japanese sound, the sexy French house sound, the minimal Berlin sound and the soulful and bouncing New York City sound. “What inspires me is music that stands the test of time and so I strive to create music that is timeless,” explains Munch. "I draw on inspiration from Tchaikovsky to Oscar Peterson to Jimi Hendrix. From an early age I realized that what they had created was something I wanted to create."[This quote needs a citation]

Munch has said that a foreign exchange program to Belgium he partook in when he was an adolescent changed his view on the world, and is what has allowed him to be as successful as he is. He has expressed that his best friend during the exchange, also an exchange student, from Canada, is who inspired him to become a DJ, and criticed many of his musical creations during the one year exchange.

Munch is known for playing DJ sets that transport the audience on an unexpected journey by incorporating unique material into his sets. He is a master at integrating filters and hard-hitting effects. He brings his own mixer (DJM-909) and effect units such as TC Electronic powercore, KAOSS pad 3, and 2 laptops. His DJ sets have already found their way to the most influential Clubs in New York City, such as Pacha, Crobar and APT, and he was even invited to warm up for David Guetta when he last visited Pacha NYC in 2006. Peter has also played for the Danish Royal family several times the latest at a private birthday party at the National Museum of Art.
