Daniel Scott Zahller Brown (born May 15, 1990) is an American internet blogger on YouTube under the alias Pogobat. During his freshman year in college, Brown was majoring in Political Science. In his sophomore year, majoring in Advertising at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, he became displeased with the current educational system as expressed in a video blog and to engage in a future project, Brown dropped out of school. He explained that "schooling was interfering with [his] education".This sparked a large discussion including two other youtubers,Mickeleh and Thunderf00t.They disagreed with aspects of his view. Brown has been noted in the media for his newly and widely viewed self-made videos. This channel is where Dan Brown posted his first videos, including his Rubik's Cube tutorial.

Overview

He is currently the 38th most subscribed director on YouTube, with over 250,000 subscribers[4] and 3 million channel views.

Dan Brown's YouTube username, Pogobat, is a combination of pogo sticks and the band The Aquabats. His other channel, Dan Brown's Universe (DBU), featured a vlog series of the same name, which has since been moved to his Pogobat channel. DBU features segments such as "Interesting Viewer," "Let's Go on an Adventure," "Contest Time," "Twitter Tuesday," and "Wall Wednesday." "Wall Wednesday" is where Dan puts items, that viewers send him, on his wall that he uses as a backdrop for his videos. Now, the DBU channel features extras from his DBU vlogs, his short-lived daily vlog project, and a popular interactive collaboration with fellow YouTubers such as the Vlogbrothers and Household Hacker, called "Who Wants To Be A YouTubillionaire?". He also hosted a few episodes of the web show PopTub in November 2009.

Topics covered in his videos

Part 1 of Brown's video on how to solve Rubik's Cube has over 14 million views as of March 2010 - part 2 has over 8 and a half million views. Brown is also noteworthy for the amount of money that he has earned from the advertisements that YouTube places alongside his videos as part of its partners program which was created in December 2007. As of early 2009 he was earning approximately $2500 per month from the program. Brown stated, "I look at YouTube now really as a career... not something I’ll be doing forever, but I have not maxed out my potential at all" Earning this money allowed Brown to take a trip to China. In China, Dan made vlogs telling his viewers what he was doing on his trip. His regular videos cover a wide variety of topics, including legalizing marijuana, Barack Obama, Pirates Vs. Ninjas, doomsday predictions, subliminal messages, and the existence of aliens. "How To Solve A Rubik's Cube" earned him first place in the instructional video category of the second annual YouTube Video Awards in 2007. He appeared on Fox's Studio B show. He has also received coverage from the New York Post and Associated Press. He stated, "I like the attention, but what I like even better are the comments from people saying ‘Dan you’re wrong,’ I want to be as smart and well-informed as possible." Besides solving the Rubik's Cube, some of his other talents include stunt pogo, card tricks, guitar, drumming, piano, and juggling [5]

Media coverage

Brown's achievements have been cited by The Washington Post[6], MSNBC[7], Fox News[8], the St. Petersburg Times[9], and the Canadian CBC News[10].

During the 2008 U.S. election campaign, Brown was interviewed on CNN[11], where he stated, "I'd prefer any of the Democrats over any of the Republicans, with the exception of perhaps Ron Paul."[12]

Personal life

Brown revealed to his viewers that he is in love, as exemplified by his video "Dan Brown Unplugged" in which he admits that he is in love with a girl who "bring[s] color to [his] world." He also admits that he has "been around the bases a few times." Popular conjecture, widely derived from his Facebook, Dailybooth, and Twitter, indicates that the interest mentioned in this song is Danielle deLeon, an aspiring YouTube celebrity known as StrummingSally on YouTube[13], a student photographer. Since then, deLeon became more prominent on his YouTube channel, publicly taking the role of Brown's girlfriend. It is unknown whether they plan to get married in the near future, but Brown admits that "when [he] first looked into [her] eyes, [he] saw [his] whole life there with [her]."[14]

Appearance on Who Wants to Be a Millionaire?

Brown appeared on Who Wants to Be a Millionaire? in January 2010 and won 5,000 dollars from the show. He said he would donate $500 of his winnings to help victims of the 2010 Haiti earthquake, and would give the rest of his winnings (after taxes) to the Wikimedia Foundation.[15]

Dan 3.0

On July 10th, 2010 at Vidcon Dan revealed a secret project he had been working on called Dan 3.0. The basis of the project was that Dan would open a suggestion forum, letting the viewers decide what Dan should do for a whole year of his life. He uploaded 3 FAQ videos, answering the viewers' questions about the project. Dan 3.0 began on August 2nd, 2010. So far, accepted tasks include eating a carrot, donating blood, writing a letter to President Obama, and recording a song with YouTube vlogger Hank Green.

From August 24 to the 30th, Dan visited Danielle in Pennsylvania. Since his visit, Brown announced in his last video, "Letter to Danielle", that he would scale back his original plans with Dan 3.0 and instead blog on a Monday-Wednesday-Friday basis. Brown later clarified that he is working with his sponsor, Revision3, to focus on the "community organizational aspect" of his project. Brown then explained that since the project, he has been dealing with stress, thereby making arrangements to move back in with his mother in two weeks. This has sparked concern amongst viewers about Brown's emotional state and some have called for Brown to end the project for his own safety.
