Panchal (Gujarati પંચાલ) is an Indian title, in tune with the Hindu caste system, that represents some of the castes that are predominant in the Indian state of Gujarat that are either agriculturalists (farmers) or Blacksmiths.[1]

Ethnicity

The surname is much popular and denotes a particular suthar or Luhar status. The Panchals mainly belong to the various suthar/Luhar castes. They are involved in carpentry, black smith and gold smith work. They are considered the spine for the village as well as urban life.

In southern part of India, the people from the Panchal community are called as Viswakarmas or Viswabrahmins.

Vishwakarma Castes in Gujarat

Panchal community of Gujarat has been follower of Lord Vishvakarma as principle deity. Some of the profession practiced by Panchals and related last names are given below:

  1. Carpentry: Gurjar Sutar (aka Suthar). The common last name in use are Panchal, Suthar, Mistry, Wadia, Pitroda, Sanghadia, Gajjar
  2. Black smith known as Luhar with lastname as Panchal, Luhar.
  3. Sompuras: Related with construction of temples, wood and stone carving, fired clay and ceramic products.

  6. Photography

Panchals catered to the needs of chariots, horse carriages, furniture, home construction and agricultural equipment. They have witnessed the transition from animal driven water lifting wheel to use of diesel engines and electrical water pumps being used now for irrigation. The entrepreneurial Panchals developed designs and manufactured various parts, assemblies and sub-assemblies for cotton textile mills. They have been engaged in production of bobbins, shuttles, lattices, weaving looms and ancillary items of equipment for dyeing and bleaching, weaving looms, drilling rigs, water pumps, lathe machine, drilling machines and hand tools. With industrialization Panchals adopted technical professions such as: Draughtsman, design engineer, architects, and shop floor and construction supervisors. The last name Panchal is synonym to Vishwakarma, the Creator of the Universe. The inborn natural creative and technical skill of Panchal has remained the accepted fact.
