pictures

please do not: 1)replace pictures already placed by other users 2)place pictures where they don't fit.

thanks--Urthogie 13:46, 3 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

pleeze do not 1) knee-jerk delete contributions 2)use the Rapping article as your fanzine site. seriously -- look at the 'editorial control' you have exercized; its time to ease back, homie. thanks--Ghetteaux 13:57, 3 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for adding an appropriate image at the right place at the right time. I plan on keeping it and frankly prefer it over Rakim. Thanks!--Urthogie 15:48, 4 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]
yo, thanx 2 you 4 being a true playa when it comes to the rapping page. --Ghetteaux 02:27, 5 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Recent revert

Thx Urth. Last thing we need is another POV-pusher and apparently we have one. Your edit summary was exactly my thought. I'm at three now, unfortunately, but the guy doesn't seem to like to talk so there's no way to proceed. Marskell 14:20, 31 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

What is your opinion on the current proposal at Islamofascism (term)?

Eager to hear... peace, BYT 12:04, 1 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Empty sections

Always try to avoid adding sections without any content to an article, especially on featured articles (I just removed an empty one on rapping from hip hop music). Always write the section first (in your namespace or on your desktop, and then add the section second). It helps the article look complete (even if it isn't), and keeps up a professional appearance. Thanks, man. --FuriousFreddy 20:52, 2 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Wikipedia actually operates on both the eventualist and immediatist principles, but you have to accomidate for both. That's what talk pages, temp pages, to-do lists, the sandbox, and user pages are all for. It's like Disney World: you keep the park looking clean and neat and complete, while you're doing all the tinkering and tampering away from the public's view. Always remember that millions visit the Wikipedia every day for information, so it should look as good, if not better, than Encarta or any other such service.

About your edits to rapping, I'm going to read the article in depth now, and may make some changes. Off the top, I should say that, when discussing the art of rapping, never use "rap" in this form: "Rap can be delivered over an electronic beat, over human beatboxing, or acapella— without any accompaniment". The primary reason for this is because most Wikipedia editors and readers still don't know that rapping is not an article on hip hop music, and will be confused (because they know "hip hop music" only as "rap".) "A rap" is fine, as is "raps", "rapping", etc. --FuriousFreddy 21:03, 2 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Other things I noticed:

  • Watch out for POV. "Immense vocal presence" is very POV.
  • Pictures should go on the right when they are placed in bulleted sections or other locations where they would interfere with text formatting. Otherwise, left-right-left works fine.
  • Bulleted list items that are defined by paragraphs and not single phrases/sentences look better italicized rather than bold. Nothing should usually be bold on a page except for the name of your article and any alternate names for the article in the header.
  • Wikilink a term or name exactly once in an article, unless your article is very long or you are including a "see also" section.
  • Use "rapping in hip-hop" instead of the more awkward "hip-hop rapping".
  • Make sure your header is comprehensive enough to be its own stub article, because a significant amount of your readers aren't going to read the rest. Is there anything particularly incorrect with my revision?
  • Always type out "1950s" or "1970s". Do not leave it as "'50s" or "'70s" for reasons of ambiguity.
  • The actual phrase is "word is bond" (as in "I am bound by my word"), not "word is bone", "word is born", or a number of other derivatives.
  • Avoid most non-possessive contractions.
  • Never start two adjacent sentences with the same word.
  • Avoid referencing the article in the article (especially referencing pictures).
  • And don't link the competition! ;)

--FuriousFreddy 21:42, 2 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I've never seen that in the MoS. Something like that is a self reference, and there is a policy to avoid self-references (especially since some of the sites which reprint Wikipedia articles don't include the pictures. Oh, and your lead doesn't neccessarily have to be concise (especially for a longer article). Information on the usages of nigger and bitch in hip hop music/culture should be discussed within those articles (and they already are, though the entry at bitch could be expanded upon somewhat). A passing one sentence mention somewhere under the vocabulary section is all that should be covered at rapping. --FuriousFreddy 01:09, 4 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

OK!

"Islamic extremist terrorism is responsible for more deaths and woundings than any other form of terrorism." No, this is not a statement we can present as time of day. Are the Lord's Resistance Army, FARC, and the Tamil Tigers included in the count? I'm sorry Urth, but there's no way we can allow a statement that absolute ("killing or wounding") in the lead to this page. --Marskell 21:43, 2 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Hi again. Well now, I tracked down that source myself and added it in under what is now "attitudes toward". Given that single largest group is unspecified (more fatalities there than the rest combined) isn't it still misleading? Marskell 08:05, 3 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Well now, say you have three grades out of eight classes with an 80% average. Wouldn't it be misleading to tell your mom "my overall average is 80%"? ;). The majority of fatalities are unspecified is the problem as I see it. Anyhow, I've just made a comment on the talk page. Marskell 08:25, 3 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Given our lengthy debates with Lee, I'm sure you'll find this link interesting: [1]. I retrieved it from the Islamism page Unfortunately "Islamic extremism" doesn't even warrant a mention here, but it's a very good historical overview of the terminology topic. Marskell 10:34, 3 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Oh yes, I'm in agreement as I've said before. From the link above: "Political Islam may well be an oxymoron, since nowhere in the Muslim world have politics been separated from religion." (Turkey is arguably an exception). Do you read it if you haven't; there's a hell of a lot of sources we might use. Marskell 16:52, 3 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

re:removal of cotw

I removed it because it failed to reach the required number of votes to be kept as a candidate, as far as I could tell. The entry said "Nominated on 04:32, 29 December 2005 (UTC); needs 15 votes by 2 February." As it is the 3rd today, and this entry only has 13 votes, I removed. I admit I am new to cotw, so if I have made a mistake I apologise (though please let me know where I went wrong if that is the case). Thanks, Petros471 14:01, 3 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

No problem. Thanks for getting back to me. --Petros471 15:39, 3 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Template:EWS CORP

I have created this to represent The E.W. Scripps Company.

But now, users like User:CFIF among others want it deleted, I worked extra hard getting the template together.

I am still a user of "rookie" stauts, what can I do??? And how can I contact the users involved???

I would really appreciate it!!! --User:WIKISCRIPPS2005 06:15PM/18:15 EST (11:15PM/23:15 UTC) FRIDAY 03 FEBRUARY 2006

Edit summaries

Please, use the edit summary to just summarize your edit. I'm asking that all of us refrain from using it for anything else. I think this might be one of those small things that can make editing go more smoothly for all of us. Thanks, Tom Harrison Talk 20:05, 4 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I think you like hip hop too...lol=)

Hey

Thanks for your feedback on the User: aim thing; I'm sure if they can do mailto: links and stuff there's a way to do aim: links. Does this work for you? [aim:farhanmannan@mac.com AIM me!]

EDIT: Lol I guess not. It works in html as <a href=aim:whatever> </a> but I'm sure you knew that. Sorry to clog up your talk page.

stub renaming

I'm sorry but I don't support your proposed rename. In stub-sorting it's not necessary to distinguish between bands and groups. Remember also that the stub tag is removed as soon as the article is expanded. --Bruce1ee 06:37, 9 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Please see my comment at WP:SFD. --Bruce1ee 13:46, 10 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks, and Hip Hop Culture page...

I am reading the documentation you sent me.

I just wanted to tell you thank you, and explain that I am in no way attempting to be a vandal, I just don't think the Hip Hop Culture page reflects the full breath of the culture.

Thanks.

Hip-Hop Culture

heres why: "(also known as Hip-Hop, Hip Hop, and Hiphop globally)"-- these alternate spellings, put forward by some revival movements, are not used much in comparison-- both in the press and otherwise. --- The term that you used was not the earliest spelling of the word in Hip-Hop. Why do you have the right to state this as the spelling without justifying your source?

"knowledge of self, culture and overstanding"-- you cant link to the hip hop association just because it professes these values, that puts forward a point of view that favors its significance. --- This I understand, but Knowledge of Self, culture and overstanding has been a part of Hip-Hop culture since 1974. I feel to not include it is a political act, and this bothers me. In Cuba there are 6 elements, and KRS One has conceived 9. There is no talk of that in this entry. The entry overall seems very biased, in limiting the scope of Hip-Hop culture.

"The successful publishing of a variety of books, the creation of culture exchange platforms and the founding of at least three major Hip-Hop culturee institutions have helped in the understanding that Hip hop is a culture."-- hip hop was recognized as a culture before these books, and culture is a subjective concept anyway-- it cant be proven what effect these early books really had on perceptions of hip hop.---- I see your point. Thank you. Still, i don't believe that your explanation is full enough.

"A new generation of leaders emerged from Hip-Hop culture. These include a variety of people actively uplifting, improving and redefining their communities. Hip-Hop has in large been created by an active need for self expression and exploration, innovation and community/economic development." -- this is a point of view and the creation of a new section was unecessary.--- I disagree completely here. Hip-Hop has given rise to a generation of leaders. One only need to look at the global community to know that. And the entry speak very little of Hip-Hop in other places besides the US. I believe that is very limiting.

Thanks for the dialogue. That's what's really worth it. I just want this page to reflect more. It is very limited in scope, and marginalizes largely the growth and influence of the culture.

Please advise. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Rolandobrown (talkcontribs)

Does Jewish terrorism correctly redirect to Zionist political violence for you? I keep getting sent to List of organisations involved in religious terrorism. Tom Harrison Talk 16:36, 18 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks, that worked.
An engineer, a chemist, and a computer scientist were driving through the desert. Suddenly, the car sputtered and died. The engineer said, "Open the hood and let me have a look." The chemist said, "I'll check the gas tank." The computer scientist said, "Okay, but first let's just get out of the car, close the doors, then get back in and try restarting it."

Elaborate changes

Same for you! I didn't say I didn't want to discuss. I replied to your suggestion. You didn't convince me. And you did no effort to discuss prior to elaborate chnages.

To get started on a better foot: I think several improvements of the naming conventions page are possible. But it also depends on what several wikipedia contributors are building as separate NC guidelines. Esthetic editorial work on the policy page is no solution. --Francis Schonken 20:04, 19 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]
