Subfluvial tunnel ESPO and Lena River is the engineering object providing crossing by Eastern Siberia–Pacific Ocean oil pipeline of the Lena River.

The object is on a 1,755 kilometres (1,091 mi) oil pipeline. On the river it is between a confluence of Olyokma River and Soljanka village.

Building method and design

Characteristics of underwater transition
Width
Width of Lena River[1] 1,440 metres (4,720 ft)
Culvet length[1] 1,598 metres (5,243 ft)
Total length including coastal sites[1] 3,700 metres (12,100 ft)
Depth
Depth of a bottom from a water level[1] 6.8 metres (22 ft)
Depth of an underwater trench of an oil pipeline from a water level, max[1] 12 metres (39 ft)

The oil pipeline is a very heavy object, at water crossing the seldom place on bridges. Builders have initially chosen underground underwater type for this crossing. Initial variation of the project has been based on a horizontal drilling technology, but have decided to build сulvert under the river later, having laid an oil pipeline in a trench.[2]

According to designers of Transneft, the Special attention at building of underwater crossing is given ecological safety of object. The decision on use open cut river and stream crossing is based on study by experts of Transneft of possible variants of overcoming of a waterway, proceeding from geological and hydrological conditions of a still of Lena River. According to engineers Transneft this crossing is unique on reliability of a design. Is it is reached at the expense of use of pipes with high safety factor and to increased requirements to quality of metal. In addition pump stations #14 is on the right coast of Lena right after underwater transition ESPO, this measure allows to lower pressure in a pipe in operation to a minimum.[2]

The underwater piece of an oil pipeline is a pipe revetted lining wood lath; over it are established pig-ironed pipeline weights.[2] The design possesses raised reliability at the expense of use of pipes with high safety factor and to increased requirements to quality of metal:[1]

  • The thickness of a wall of a pipe on a site of underwater transition of the main oil pipeline makes 29 millimetres (1.1 in).
  • Strength of a used steel above, than at analogues on 15 %.

The first attempt to construct crossing has been made in the summer of 2008, but the river is up and was astable and has not allowed to perform work.[3]

Crossing has been constructed from the end of March to the beginning of April 2009, when ice on the river has reached the greatest thickness. Works on packing of a pipe of an oil pipeline in a trench have been executed from ice of the Lena River and from pontoons in specially cut through ice-holes in all widths of the river. Packing ESPO has been made for five days by a dragging culvert method.[2] Joined commission ESPO management company, "Vostoknefteprovod", Center of technical diagnostics "Diaskan" and Technical supervision of Russia have accepted the object on May, 25th, 2009.[1]
