John Adams, Sr. (1691-1791) was the father to John Adams and his siblings, and the Grandfather of John Quincy Adams. John Addams was the fifth in a line from Henry Adams, who immigrated from England in 1638 [1].

Life

Adams married Susanna Boylston, who came from the wealthy and respected line of Bolystons of Brookline[2]. Together they raised a family of three sons, of which John Adams was the oldest [3], in Quincy, Mass. John, Sr.'s other sons were Peter and Elihu [4]. John, Sr., was a Congregationalist Preacher, but also worked as a farmer and a selectman, or councilman, during the time his sons new him. The younger John Adams wrote of the religion his father was so passionate for as it continued to die, "[they are] bearers of freedom, a cause that still had holy urgency." [5] the Senior John pressed upon his son to live up to his high Puritan origins, which young John continued to strive towards for the rest of his life. When his eldest son went to Harvard College, aged sixteen, his Father expected him to become a minister as the elder had done.[6] However, oung John became a schoolteacher in Worchester in 1756 and, later, decided to study law in the office of James Putnam.
