Requests for new templates and updates to existing templates can be placed on this page. Click here to create a new request.

Templates can be created by anyone, but it is not always clear how to get a particular template function to work. If you are familiar with Wikipedia template structure please consider helping with the requests on this page.

Add new requests at the bottom of the page. Please provide a detailed description of how you would like the template to operate.

Request #1

A template for high schools (or even all institutions of education). I was looking for one and didn't see it, but:

 • am I looking in the wrong place?
 • am I asking in the wrong place?
 • should I be the one doing it? If so, how?

I know that there are lots of pages on different U.S. High schools. I just didn't see any common theme.

Extended Biography Template

I would like an extended biography template that has more than simply dates of birth and death. In particular I would like to have slots for standard biblographic data such as:

 • Education
 • Nationality
 • Occupation(s)

The advantage of having this in template form is that it is then possible to build better query interfaces and would eventually allow a large number of categories to be dispensed with such as Irish Engineers which is really just the intersection of two categories that could each be compiled automatically by a bot. Equally a lot of silly lists could be avoided. For more info on these ideas see my user page.

The existing template seems to be very limited, am I just looking in the wrong place?

One objection to this might be performance but I would rather look into ways to improve performance. For example locking the template to prevent graphiti designed to cause a massive sequence of collateral edits. --Gorgonzilla 20:44, 18 August 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Number of Contributions

I would like a template that displays the numer of edits a user had made. I know Wikipeda has a way of counting edits. I have made a "dummy template" below to illistrate what I want. A "dummy template" is not actually a template, it is a Divbox that has been placed into the article.

Would expand into

The number 00 represents the number of edits that apply to the coresponding edit types, it is not necessarily going to always be zero, or two digits (a real zero would look like 0). "Articles edited" means the number of aricles that the user has edited at least once, including article creations. The same principle applies to Talk, Project, and template pages.

this is just a suggestion, It is less likely a completed virsion (if any) would resemple this "dummy template"

The problem is that I have no idea where to get those numbers from. Is there a way? or would an Admin have to create a TOTALEDITS function that returns a single numerical value (number of edits)? Kjammer 08:57, 2 September 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Perhaps something similar to Kate's tool. Kjammer 06:48, 16 September 2005 (UTC)[reply]
This would be nifty, but wouldn't it put a terrible load on the servers once it became popular, as I imagine would happen? Especially if people started adding it with their sigs in talk pages? If anyone implements this, I hope they will put it on their own website, and write the template to use of their own CPU cycles :-/ If anyone is willing to do this, I think this would be a nifty template.---CH (talk) 01:28, 21 November 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Photoshop

I would appreciate a vanity template for a Babel tag that says "I am (a beginning/intermediate/expert) Photoshop user." Thanks for your help. Denni 00:48, 16 September 2005 (UTC)[reply]

SectionCopy

I don't know if there's another way to do this (if so, please tell me: talk), but I've often found that I need to copy certain information between articles. Besides this being tedious, it also causes problems, for instance when one instance of the information is updated, and then the copy remains untouched. It also means that correctly updating pieces of information across WikiPedia involves multiple article edits.

Here's an example:
On the Stargate SG-1 page, there is information about when each Season of the show is released on DVD. This information is also available, in less detail, on the List of Stargate SG-1 episodes page, which lists each of the aforementioned Seasons.

What I want to be able to do is, on the List of Stargate SG-1 episodes page, add Stargate SG-1 and then have that section of the Stargate SG-1 actively rendered into the List of Stargate SG-1 episodes article.

Optionally, it would be even more helpful to be able to copy just small sections of sections, by placing marker templates in the source article. So, for instance:

Source Article#Section
Blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah
open
Important Bit
close
Blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah
Destination Article#Section
Blah blah blah blah blah blah
Source Article
Blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah

Obviously the open and close tags are invisible on the actual page.

This is 'SectionCopy' only because we don't want full articles to be copied across WikiPedia; if you need to copy more than a section then you're doing something wrong.

If this is already available, I'd love to know about it, and if it's not, why on earth not!? This would be so helpful, and thankyou to anyone who codes this. --alfakim 21:17, 29 September 2005 (UTC)[reply]

User ar-0

Can someone please make a language template for user ar-0? Anyone who knows Arabic can do this, just take Template:User ar-1 and edit it to resemble Template:User en-0 :) I don't know enough Arabic to make this. -- Ynhockey 22:33, 23 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Ok I got someone to write this template, but it should probably be wikified. See Template:User ar-0 -- Ynhockey 23:01, 23 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Middle Ages Project

Hi, it would be nice to have a template that can be used on relevant article talk pages that announces the existence of the Middle Ages Community Group and invites interested wikipedians to read or join in the project. The Middle Ages group is long established and has many members. Any ideas or help appreciated. Stbalbach 20:57, 24 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]

I have created wikitext for this template. My suggestion is as follows:
Middle Ages Icon This Article is part of WikiProject Middle Ages, a project for the community of Wikipedians who are interested in the Middle Ages. For more information, see the project page.

It may need some more text, a different picture(see here)etc. , but I hope this helps you in some way. --Dave the Rave (DTR) 22:53, 20 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Aqua template

I copied the following from Village pump assistance. I'd be grateful for any help.Chelman 20:51, 31 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]

I was thinking of developing a dynamic (sweetwater)aquarium guide template similar to the taxobox. Per species of fish one can add:

temperature ph range general hardness range carbonate hardness range whether the fish is a bottom, surface or 'middle' dweller whether it requires flowing water ease of keeping ease of breeding

Preferably this would use graphic icons.

I wonder whether there is a place on wikipedia where i can experiment with dynamic templates? And is there anyone who would be willing to provide assistance?

Chelman 15:30, 31 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Well....actually i got down to it and managed to put down an early version. you can check the template out by adding the following to an aquarium fish-species page (use the preview mode ;) :

I would be most grateful for any and all suggestions on how to improve the template.

Revert template

Could a template be made for when you revert some edits? Maybe something like this:

12.34.56.78

which would generate the text:

"reverted edits by 12.34.56.78 to last version by Wikiuser"

The template could have an extra optional argument for providing a reason for the revert.

I have a feeling this template might not be possible with the current version of MediaWiki. Are templates even allowed in edit summaries? --ColdFeet 08:23, 9 November 2005 (UTC)[reply]

NOAA template

The national oceanic and atmospheric association is a government source that I use, I want a template similar to the NPS template, but for NOAA sourced text. Thanks! — Preceding unsigned comment added by 128.101.70.244 (talkcontribs)

Uh, the template could say something like "Information on this page was copied from a government source and is in the public domain" which pretty much what the NPS template is. It's just the NPS template has a picture of the NPS symbol, so it's slightly deceptive to use it, it makes it seem like it comes from the national parks system.

ArXiv template, LLR template plez

Hi, currently many research papers in math/physics also exist as arXiv eprints, and citations to the arXiv version is most useful for Wikipedia since these are available permanently on-line. For the benefit of those editing math/physics articles, I have two requests:

1. A template which when called like

 • *

produces

Here, please note that all arXiv preprints are accessed via an abstract page which has a url of form http://www.arxiv.org/abs/ followed by a section like "gr-qc", followed by a number like "9811093" in which the first two digits encode the year that the preprint was first submitted. If you look at the cited page, you can see that this particular preprint has been modified five times, and I am citing the most recent version. This example shows why the year indicated by the prefix does not always suffice, although I think the date and year could be made optional arguments for this template.

2. A new argument for which when called like

 •

produces

 • Bicak, Jiri (2000). Selected exact solutions of Einstein's field equations: their role in general relativity and astrophysics. Lect. Notes Phys. 540: 1-126. ArXiv version

Regarding WikiProject GTR, the website Living Reviews in Relativity provides high-quality peer-reviewed review papers available on-line. Naturally, these tend to be much cited. So for benefit of this project-in-formation, I request:

3. A template which when called like

 • *

produces

Here, note that all LLR papers have a url of form http://relativity.livingreviews.org/open?pubNo= followed by a code like "lrr-2004-2" (second review published in 2004). (Note: on second thought, this seems to involve a cgi-script. I don't much about that, but before writing the template, our expert should perhaps consider whether it would be really bad idea to try to offer a citation-specific url instead of the front page of this site. CH (talk))

Crucial question: these templates would be extremely useful to me and I think to others. But what if someone nominates them for deletion? If they were approved for deletion, would this destroy all citations which had used these templates? Or would the admin deleting the template make sure to migrate all citations to a new template? ---CH (talk) 17:08, 20 November 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Automatic navigational templates

I would like a template that, based on a category name passed to it, produces a navigational template. Thanks! :) --Unforgettableid | Talk to me 04:14, 27 November 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Vulgar/Offensive template

In response to some comments on Talk:Felching, I would like to request a template, similar to the spoiler template, that would mark potentially offensive material before it is read. I'm not talking about material discussing possibly offensive viewpoints; I'm talking about text, such as that at Felching and Queef, that may cause offense because of the actual language used. I was grossed out by even the first couple of lines of Felching; I would greatly have preferred the chance to not have read it. Something like "Warning: The following material may be considered vulgar and/or offensive by some." -- Calion | Talk 02:15, 25 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Unfortunately, this is a perennial complaint against established standards. See Wikipedia:No disclaimer templates. I think that some means of allowing users to 'opt out' of certain types of content would be beneficial to Wikipedia, but to date no such effort has been accepted and any template created for this would certainly be deleted. --CBDunkerson 14:36, 25 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

"Currently undergoing complete rewrite"

I have seen before, a template that goes along the lines of "This article is currently undergoing a complete re-write". But I am finding it incredibly difficult to find it now. Has it been deleted? Does anyone know where it is? And a related question: how can I use the search function outside of the mainspace?  -- Run!  17:47, 27 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I think you're looking for inuse. For searching there is a 'Search' section of your 'Preferences' which allows you to determine which name-spaces to search by default. There is also a namespace list at the bottom of any completed search where you can change the selected namespaces (and/or search term). --CBDunkerson 19:14, 27 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Thankyou very much!  -- Run!  19:18, 27 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]
