The 5th semester of Basic Sciences is held in Carbondale, IL and in Houghton Lake, MI along with a USMLE Step 1 review program. The remaining five semesters are clinical, and training is held in hospitals throughout the United States.[5][6]

History

Windsor University was founded in 1998 to provide a United States model of medical education to both US and Canadian citizens. The University recently completed the first phase of its reported $5 million dollar campus located on St. Kitts in the beginning of the January 2009 semester by adding a brand new administration building and library. The new campus is laid over 42 acres (170,000 m2) of land overlooking the Atlantic sea and was the residence of the First British Governor General and the Queens nominee of St. Kitts.[citation needed] The inauguration of the first phase of the new campus took place in January 2008.[7][8]

University Policies and Procedural Facts

Tuition Fees

Windsor University holds the distinct honor of holding the lowest tuition policy of any Caribbean medical school, with a stated flat rate of $4990 per semester for regular MD matriculated students, and $3990 for those students who have matriculated into the university's Pre-Med program. The "campus dormitories" strictly affiliated with Windsor University are located in Lime Kiln. These dorms are about a 30 minute drive from the actual medical campus. Other areas where students stay are Bird Rock, Bladens Housing, Sugar Bay Resort, and the newly opened Royal St. Kitt's Hotel and Casino.

Attendance Policy

The university requires that all students registered for any course attend at least 90% of the course lectures. Attendance is taken every day for every course, and if the student fails to meet the required 90% attendance, he/she is barred from taking the final exam for that course at the end of the semester. In addition, a $750 fine for non-compliance of the attendance policy is issued, and the student must take the "re-take" exam for that course in the following semester, during the scheduled "retake" exam period.

Dress Code and Proper Attire Policy

Students are required to either wear traditional scrubs with non-athletic sneakers, or business attire for both men and women. Blue jeans, hats, t-shirts, jewelry, sneakers, flip-flops and sandals, and other non-business attire are not allowed while on school premises. Those students who fail to comply with the dress code are forced to leave the premises.

Academic/Non Academic Non-Dismissal Policy

In addition to its extremely low tuition policy, Windsor University School of Medicine also holds a "retake" policy for those students who fail any course while attending the university. Instead of removing or expelling those students who fail courses taken at Windsor University, the university has implemented a final exam retake policy which allows students who have failed any course or courses to stay enrolled with the university so-long as they pay a monetary fee to re-attempt a failed final exam. As of now, the retake fees are as follows - 1st time failed: $250 per course, 2nd time failed: $500 per course, 3rd time failures are not allowed to retake any final exam. Chapter wise policy has been removed recently. Now 3rd time failure students are required a special permission from Academic Dean, to write the exam. 3rd time failure will result in academic dismissal according to the latest policy.
