Hand-made beds
In its genesis, Hästens was a saddle manufacturer, saddle makers were also upholsterers. Two generations of saddle makers had passed before they begun making beds. Since the beginning, natural materials have always been at the core of their manufacturing process. At the beginning, the choice was simple: we only had the genuine article there was no other alternative.

To this day, all beds and mattresses are made entirely by hand, and natural materials like cotton, horsehair, wool and flax which is far superior to anything else. This tradition of craftsmanship also allowed the bed makers to fully understand and perfect the various properties of these natural materials. Jan Ryde, representing the fifth generation, proudly carries the Hästens tradition and craftsmanship into the 21st century. Hästens has over the years laid focus on improving the mattresses whit the purpose of improving its function; Sleep. The overall goal was to refine and renew bed making techniques as much as possible. To begin with, work was carried out to improve the conventional mattress. As master craftsmen, they knew that choosing only the very best materials would produce the very best results. The best beds available in the 1800s were made in England, followed by France. The Americans had made some progress in making simpler variations of the English beds, but beds made using English craftsmanship were still considered to be the best.

Hästens has never been known to use any chemicals, synthetic materials, latex or foam (which is a petroleum-based product) in the manufacturing process. Many people are allergic to latex.

Hästens is a luxury bed company founded in 1852 in Köping, Sweden.[1] Hästens manufactures beds and mattresses that are made entirely by hand, and natural materials like cotton, horsehair, wool and flax. The company was originally a one-man horse saddle business by Pehr Adolf Janson [2] and is still a family-owned business. David Janson (Pehr's son) shifted their focus in the early 1900's from making saddles to making horse hair beds and by 1952 they had become the official bedding supplier of Sweden’s royal court. [1] Hästens currently makes the most expensive, handmade, bed in the world; It's a $90,000 dollar bed named The Vividus. [3]
