The Tree of Life (Shajarat-al-Hayat) in Bahrain is a 400 year-old[citation needed], 32 feet high North American mesquite tree located 1.2 miles or 2 kilometers away from Jebel Dukhan. The tree stands lonely in the heart of desert, on top of a 25-foot-high sandy hill. This tree should not be confused with the tree of life in the garden of Eden, mentioned in Bible. Some local residents believe that this tree has spiritual powers and has some sorts of occult practices going around it. As the tree is in a very remote location these kinds of legends flourish and attract people all over to get a glimpse.
Now there is an idol placed under the tree and some offerings are seen around it. Lots of mysteries surround the tree. Even though there is nothing else to see there other than the tree itself in the middle of the desert, it still remains a tourist attraction.
Mesquite trees are extremely well adapted to arid environments with one of the deepest known root systems (even over 160 feet deep). [1]
The tree is mentioned in the movie L.A. Story.[2]
