Little White Lies is a bi-monthly, British independent movie magazine that features writing, illustration and photography related to cinema.

History

Little White Lies is an independent film magazine produced by The Church of London. Issue zero was created as the final degree project of co-founder Danny Miller in 2001. The first issue was released in February 2005, printed in edition of 2500, and distributed only in UK Borders stores.

According to a report in The Guardian:

"Danny Miller conceived Little White Lies with his schoolfriend Matthew Bochenski aged 17, and they carried the dream with them through university and into their first jobs at skate and snowboard magazine Adrenalin. When the independent publishers behind Adrenalin collapsed last November, he put together the first issue of Little White Lies with Bochenski"[1]

In 2008, Little White Lies won its first major award: Best Designed Consumer Magazine of the Year at the Magazine Design & Journalism Awards.[2]

A website, littlewhitelies.co.uk, was launched in 2006. A major redesign took place in 2008, followed by the addition of a digital back-issue archive in 2009, and an online forum in 2010.

Rationale

Each issue of Little White Lies is themed around a single cover film, inspiring the design and editorial content of the entire issue.

The magazine's rationale is set out under the 'About' heading of littlewhitelies.co.uk:

"Because movies don’t exist in a vacuum, we venture beyond the boundaries of the big screen, exploring the worlds of music, art, politics and pop culture to inform and illuminate the medium we love. Bold, beautiful and unique, LWLies is a magazine on a mission – to reshape the debate across the movie landscape."

Design

The design of each issue of Little White Lies is inspired by its feature film, represented on the cover by an illustration of its lead actor. The cover film also influences interior aspects, such as editorial icons, chapter headings and custom typefaces. However, the overall template of the magazine remains the same.

Issues

Little White Lies' cover films have ranged from small independent films to blockbuster releases. Little White Lies has also taken specific themes and used them as the over-arching concern of the issue (this has happened twice with #010 - The Chinese Film Issue and #030 - The Future Issue.)

Content/Ranking system

Little White Lies' content is split into six chapters: Lead Review, Editorial Introduction, Features, Theatrical Reviews, Back Section, Incoming. Little White Lies uses a tripartite ranking system.[3] The categories (Anticipation, Enjoyment and In Retrospect) are marked out of 5 and accompanied by explanatory text.

Press

Little White Lies has featured in publications[4] and books, including 100 Years of Magazine Covers and guardian.co.uk, which described the magazine as “a beautiful-looking creation that revels in film's visual allure.”

“Little White Lies displays a total love of its cinematic subject matter. Its leftfield design sensibility is a joy with playful and dramatically inventive graphic and type use to the fore. The magazine packs a stark noir punch and at times one is left jealously wondering exactly how some of the typographic effects were achieved… always a good thing!”

Distribution

Little White Lies is distributed through over 500 outlets in the UK, including WHSmith, HMV and Fopp.

Events

Little White Lies has been involved in the following events:

  • Film Screenings: Little White Lies has run two film clubs. Fopp Film Club was a monthly screening event held in the café of Fopp’s (now defunct) store on Tottenham Court Road, London. It showed classic and cult films and featured live Q&As with Guillermo del Toro and the cast of This is England. The second, Film Knights, was a series of monthly, pre-theatrical release previews at the private Rex members cinema in London, in conjunction with drinks brand Suso.
  • Exhibition: A party and exhibition of art inspired by Romance & Cigarettes was held at jaguarshoes in East London to coincide with the release of Little White Lies fifth issue. It was attended by the director, John Turturro.
  • End of the Road Festival: Little White Lies curated a film tent, (the Cinedrome), at the End of the Road Festival in 2008 and 2009. In 2008, the Cinedrome exclusively previewed Man on Wire. In 2009, director Stephen Frears appeared for a live Q&A.
