One Million Moms (OMM) is an anti-gay pro-censorship group based on the ideals they describe as "traditional family values". It is a project, or "ministry" of the American Family Association[1]. The organization operates largely online via staging campaigns in which the site's members and users are instructed to contact the offending party. It does not name a founder or any members,[citation needed] however it does collect money through its website. [2]

The group openly refers to the use of objectionable material in the media as a 'culture war.' [3]

Founder and history

Mode of Operation

OMM targets television programs, advertisers, and television networks with material the group finds immoral, violent, vulgar, or profane. An issue is posted on their site, and members are sent a mass e-mail to "TAKE ACTION" while visitors are provided links to do the same.[4] One method the group uses is to instruct their members and users to personally contact an offending party.

“Make a personal phone call to JC Penney's customer service department. Their numbers are '...' (customer service) and '...' (corporate headquarters). Ask JC Penney to replace Ellen Degeneres as their new spokesperson immediately and remain neutral in the culture war.”-OMM Website instructing members on an issue with JC Penny's choice of a homosexual spokesperson[5]

“Since the corporate office doesn't consider your call important, please call your local store manager. Local managers are more likely to listen to your concerns and pass them along to the corporate office. Please be kind when you ask them to tell corporate that Ellen DeGeneres is a poor choice for spokesperson and should be replaced with someone who more represents your family values.”-OMM website advising members of further action on the JC Penny issue[6]

OMM also provides members and users with a pre-written e-mail that the user can sign and send directly from OMM's website. The user has the option to edit the letter before it is sent.

“As a mother and a member of OneMillionMoms.com, I am greatly disappointed in your company's decision to offend mainstream Americans with your newest mail catalogue.

In the hopes of making sales, your company has instead offended many customers in the process. The back cover looks like just a regular ad for your wedding registry service, but there is one major difference with the cake topper of two men instead of the traditional man and woman. The ad also includes a license plate that reads "I do" and hearts scattered everywhere. Just because gay marriage is legal in a few states does not mean this is appropriate marketing. As a conservative customer I will not support it.

While your company is a household name, I do not agree with your irresponsible choice of standing behind gay marriage. The homosexual content is highly offensive and not family-friendly advertising.

As a consumer, I am asking you to please pull your "two groom" ad immediately and support traditional family values instead of this liberal agenda. My decision to shop in your store depends on it.

I look forward to hearing from you regarding my concern.”-pre-written e-mail complaint available to members and users of OneMillionMoms.com[7]

JC Penney & Ellen DeGeneres

The group has protested the store JC Penney[8] in response to the company's choice to adopt openly homosexual comedienne Ellen DeGeneres as a spokesperson.

Modern Family

OMM has also targeted the ABC program Modern Family, attempting to force advertisers to pull support from the program. This is due to the show portraying a male homosexual couple, as well as an utterance of profanity.[9]

Other campaigns

The group has also targeted companies such as Macy's, Mattel, Jenny Craig, Family Dollar. They led a campaign to get Ben & Jerry's to discontinue their flavor "Schweddy Balls", named after a Saturday Night Live skit. [10] OMM has taken credit for the interruption of a second season of the MTV series Skins.[11]

Inconsistency[citation needed]

OMM states its purpose is to stop the "exploitation of children".[12] However, OMM has taken credit for the interruption of a second season of the MTV series [[2]].[13] OMM purports their actions are to protect children from 'inappropriate' media. However, Skins is branded as a Teen Drama, not targets at a young audience. Also, the show was hosted on MTV, a network that does not air any kind of children's programming. Additionally, the group has attacked Macy's for a wedding advertisement in their catalogue.[14]

Critisism on Actual Number of Members

Ellen DeGeneres has struck back at the group on her own program.[15] Among her allegations she notes that per the group's own Facebook[16] page, the actual number of members is closer to 40,000.
