Lukas Isaac Paul Jutkiewicz (born 28 March 1989) is an English professional footballer who plays for Football League Championship club Middlesbrough as a striker, having previously played for Swindon Town, Everton, Plymouth Argyle, Huddersfield Town, Motherwell and Coventry City.

Club career

Southampton

Jutkiewicz was born in Southampton and joined the Saints Academy as a ten-year old after playing Tyro League football with Eastleigh Earls and Winsor. He attended Highfield primary school where he was taught PE by Derryn Robinson. He also attended The Mountbatten School. After three years at the academy, he left but continued to play Tyro League football with Brendon before signing for Swindon Town.[2]

Swindon Town

Jutkiewicz made his Swindon Town debut at the age of 17, as a substitute in a 2–1 defeat at Swansea's Liberty Stadium in April 2006. [citation needed] A week later, he had his first start in a 2–1 win at Scunthorpe United. Jutkiewicz signed a three year contract in July 2006. He was patient for his introduction to the first team in 2006–07, but finally made his first league start of the season in Swindon's 2–0 defeat to Mansfield Town. The next game, against top of the table Walsall, saw Jutkiewicz score his first senior goal, helping Swindon to a 2–0 victory[3]. He went on to score four more goals during the 2006–07 season to help the club gain promotion to League One.

Everton

On 17 March 2007, Jutkiewicz joined Everton for a £1m fee.[4][5] He joined up with the club for pre-season training in July 2007, and was handed the number 27 shirt – previously worn by Andy van der Meyde.

In January 2008, Plymouth Argyle signed Jutkiewicz on loan until the end of the 2007–08 season. Here he worked under his former boss at Swindon, Paul Sturrock.[6] He made his debut for the Pilgrims three days later in their 3–2 FA Cup victory over Hull City, coming on as an 85th minute substitute.[7]

The 2008–09 season saw Jutkiewicz make his Everton debut, coming on as a substitute in a 3–0 victory over Sunderland in December 2008. The following month he was again sent out on loan, to Huddersfield Town, until the end of the season.[8] He made his first start for Huddersfield in a 1–0 win over Leeds United in February 2009 but made little impression overall, failing to find the net in his loan spell.

Motherwell

In August 2009, Jutkiewicz joined Scottish Premier League side Motherwell on loan until January 2010. Jutkiewicz scored his first goal for the Fir Park outfit against Falkirk. In January 2010, his Motherwell loan period to was extended to the end of the season.[9] On 5 May, he won the man-of-the-match award in the highest-scoring match in SPL history against Hibernian[10] He scored an outstanding injury-time goal from a tight angle to make it 6–6 and keep alive his team's hopes of a Europa League spot.[11] He had been playing through a knee injury incurred three months earlier and was praised for his determination by then-manager Craig Brown who also described the goal as "van Basten-like".[10][12] However, it was not considered for goal-of-the-season because the award had already been presented to Anthony Stokes a month before the end of the season.[13] On 9 May 2010, just four days after that memorable game, Jutkiewicz converted a penalty in injury time to get a 3–3 draw against Rangers at Ibrox.[14] He netted a total of 12 goals during his time with Motherwell.

Coventry City

Jutkiewicz was transferred to Coventry City for an undisclosed fee on 26 July 2010, signing a three-year contract.[15] "We are delighted to have Lukas on board and this adds more strength to the squad," said manager Aidy Boothroyd. "We wanted to enhance our attacking options and this will certainly do that. He is at the right age too, to grow and develop with Coventry City."[16] He made his competitive debut on 7 August 2010 in a 2–0 home win against Portsmouth,[17] and scored his first goal for the club one week later, scoring a stoppage time equaliser in a 2–2 draw at Watford.[18] The penultimate day of the August transfer window saw Middlesbrough FC make an undisclosed offer for the striker who scored against them 3 days earlier but this offer was rejected by the club because Andy Thorn stated that Lukas was a key part of his plans for the season.

Middlesbrough

On 14 January 2012 Middlesbrough signed Jutkiewicz on an emergency loan. The loan was instigated as a means to allow Jutkiewicz to play in that day's game against Burnley because discussions over a permanent loan had not been completed in time. [19] Following the game against Burnley, Middlesbrough confirmed the permanent transfer of Jutkiewicz for a fee in the region of £1.3m.[20] Jutkiewicz scored his first goal for Middlesbrough in an FA Cup 4th round replay game against Sunderland at the Riverside Stadium. He followed this on the 15 February 2012, by scoring his first league goal in a Middlesbrough shirt in a 2 - 1 home victory over Nottingham Forest.[21]

International career

In addition to his country of birth, England, Jutkiewicz is also eligible to play for the Republic of Ireland through his Irish grandmother, and Poland by way of his Polish grandfather, although the player has made no decision on which country to represent.[22]
