A liquor license is a permit to sell alcoholic beverages.
Canada
Liquor license is a legal authorization which allows an individual or business to manufacture or sell alcohol beverages. Usually several subtypes of liquor licenses are available for application within a certain province/state/territory. Common types of liquor licenses are: retail liquor license, special occasion permit, and manufacturer’s License.[1] There are many regulations which apply to all types of liquor licenses. For example, each license must indicate when and where liquor can be sold, who the liquor can be sold to and the amount of liquor can be sold. License holders must strictly follow all the terms and rules to avoid suspension and revocation.
Ontario
The Liquor Licensing Board of Ontario(LLBO)was the regulatory agency responsible for issuing liquor permits and regulating the sale, service and consumption of beverage alcohol in Ontario to promote moderation and responsible use to establishment in Ontario.[2] Established in 1947 under the Liquor Licence Act (Ontario)[3], the agency is not to be mistaken with the Liquor Control Board of Ontario (LCBO),[4] an alcohol retailer[5] The LLBO was replaced by the Alcohol and Gaming Commission of Ontario[6]in 1998 under the Alcohol and Gaming Regulation and Public Protection Act (Ontario)[7] passed in 1996.[8] The LLBO name lives on in many eateries and entertainment establishments which display the name to indicate the location is legally licensed to serve alcohol.[9]
Alberta
In Alberta, liquor licences are issued by the Alberta Gaming and Liquor Commission.
United Kingdom
Throughout the United Kingdom, the sale of alcohol is restricted—pubs, restaurants, shops and other premises must be licensed by the local authority. The individual responsible for the premises must also hold a personal licence. Premises licences, in as far as they concern the sale of alcohol, can be categorized to include on-licences (allowing consumption of alcohol on the premises) and off-licences (alcohol must be removed from the vendor's premises and drunk elsewhere).
United States
In the United States, liquor licences are issued by each state. Each city and localities may also have laws and regulations in acquiring such licence. For example, in the state of Oregon, the Oregon Liquor Control Commission (OLCC) regulates and controls the distribution, sales and consumption of alcoholic beverages.
Depending on the local regulations, there may be several different classes of liquor licences. There may be several choices of licence classes depending on how one intends to sell the alcoholic beverages.
