The Abyssal Rattail has the usual greatly elongated pointed tail of the rattails, as well as large eyes and a ridged conical snout. It has a chin barbel and a long first pelvic fin ray.

The colour is light brown, and black on the abdomen, on the fin bases, and around the gill openings.
