Jackson "Sonny" Kiriakis is a fictional character on the NBC soap opera Days of our Lives, played by Freddie Smith. Sonny Kiriakis is the son of the Supercouple Justin Kiriakis and Adrienne Johnson Kiriakis. Sonny was born off-screen in Texas. Sonny and his brothers returned in 2007, but they were never shown on-screen. Sonny Kiriakis made history in Days of our Lives for being the first gay character. Sonny was first seen on Days of our Lives on June 23, 2011 with his cousin Abby Deveraux. Sonny is a member of the wealthy and powerful Kiriakis family, but heavily distrusted family, yet they are more respect and legitimate than their rival the DiMera family. Sonny was raised away from the drama of Salem so he has more of a trustworthy and moral personality.

Sonny is officially apart of the first homosexual pairing in Days of our Lives history with the legacy character Will Horton. After clearing up their feelings for each other they decide to approach their relationship slowly.The relationship has been positive among the fans and it is safe to say that they are one of the most popular couple among the young characters in Days of our Lives.

Character development

Characterization

Sonny is really honest and confident in who he is. Sonny is out and proud kind of guy which really contrast to Will. He really is that nice and moral straight compass which you don't see a lot in Salem, but when it comes to the ones he love and care about he can get really protective. As stated by Freddie Smith during an interview " He is Mr. Mature and Mr. Positive, but he dos make a few mistakes along the way.

Introduction

Sonny was introduced when he was seen talking to his cousin Abby and he met Will and Gabi. Mostly his reason for Coming back to Salem was to be with his parents, but he had a tough challenge by having to tell his Uncle Victor that he was gay. After the conversation Sonny was starting to fit into the young crowd really easy, yet T wouldn't let him because he was gay. Sonny was soon protected by Victor.

Relationship with Will Horton

Will Horton originally didn't know he was gay. After his break-up with Gabi, Will sarted to spiral into a depression. After getting drunk while being with Sonny and his friends Will kissed one of them. Will started talking to his grandmother and finally said he was gay. After the Daysaster Sonny was scared will was hurt so when he saw him, his emotions was high and he kissed Will. Will was angry at Sonny for kissing him and they had a argument. Will realized that he had feelings for Sonny, but when he went go see him Brian was flirting with Sonny. Will was so sad that he slept with Gabi. Once T told how Sonny felt about Will, Will and Sonny started to date. Will heard Adrienne say how will wasn't good enough for Sonny and Will canceled their date. Adrienne told Sonny that Will heard what she said and was sorry, but Sonny was angry at his mom for saying that. Sonny tracked Will down to tell him that he was good enough for him and they shared a kiss. After a while, Lucas started to thinks Sonny was pushing Will to fast. Sonny and Will had a fight over has Sonny had sex with any other guys than him in his apartment. Sonny and Will were still arguing over a while, but T and Gabi help them get back together. After the fight they had sex for the first time, but Will find out Gabi was pregnant with his child. After deciding to give the baby to Nick to keep Sonny for breaking up with him, Will started to become more sad. Sonny asked Will to move in with him after the wedding.At Gabi's and Nick's wedding, Will told everyone that he was the father of the baby which caused him and Sonny to break-up. Sonny started to see Brian and Will started to focus more on his baby. On Valentine's Day Will received a present from Sonny, but Sonny sent it before they broke up. When Gabi went to the hospital for an emergency, Sonny showed up to the hospital for Will. After reading the letter Will wrote for him on Valentine's, Sonny realized that he couldn't be friends with will because he still had feeling for Will. Sonny and Will went back to the Will's dorm room after they got back together.

Storylines

2011-

Sonny came to town to spend more time with his family. When Sonny told Victor he was gay, Victor wasn't has mad as he thought he was but sad that Sonny would not have all the things that a heterosexual couple could have. Once T started to bully Sonny for being gay, every one stop hanging around T and he blamed Sonny for this. Victor caught T bashing Sonny and lightly threatening him by saying no one messes with a Kiriakis.

After creating a sports website for the school, Will, Sonny, and Chad found out that people was illegally using it for gambling. They tried to stop them by shutting down the site, but the people who owned the gambling site kidnapped Melanie and Chad and were going to kill them if they didn't bring the site back up. Sonny and Austin went inside to save the people caught.

Soon Sonny was thrown into the Kiriakis-DiMera feud, and Maggie and Chad was shot. Sonny and Chad orchestrated a meeting with the families to stop the fighting. They also tried to bring peace between Ej DiMera and Brady Black.

After seeing Will kiss a guy, Sonny helped Will become alright with who he is. Sonny helped Will with finding evidence to show that Ej was innocence. Over time Sonny started to develop feelings for Will, and after the Daysaster Sonny kiss Will and he and Will got into and argument. Once Will realized he had feelings for Sonny, he went see him and and saw Brian flirting with Sonny. After this Will slept with Gabi and after thought it was a mistake. When T told Will that Sonny still had feelings for him, Will went to see Sonny to clear things up and they started a slow process into dating. Will heard Adrienne say that he wasn't good enough for Sonny and canceled their date. Sonny found out what his mother said and told him that he was good enough for him and they kiss. Will father started to tell him that Sonny was pushing him to fast and that he doesn't know hardly anything about his boyfriend. Will started trying to sleep with Sonny after he got backed and ask how many guys have Sonny slept with and Sonny and him got into a fight. Will and Sonny soon talked it out and had sex for the first time.

Will soon found out Gabi was pregnant with his baby. Gabi wanted to get a abortion, but was caught by Sami and Rafe before it happened. Nick found out and Will, Gabi, and Nick decided to pass of the baby as his. Will gave the baby up because he didn't want to lose Sonny and didn't want the baby to be like him going from place to place. Sonny soon found out that Gabi was pregnant, but thought the baby was Nick's. Sonny and Will spent Christmas at the Kiriakis Mansion and Horton Mansion. After Chad decided to tell him what Gabi did to Melanie, Sonny cut all ties with Gabi and advice Will to, but since he couldn't tell him why he couldn't stop him. For New Years will found out Sonny's New Years resolution was to make Will fall in love with him and they had a loving moment, Sonny soon ask Will to move in with him and gave him a key. At Gabi's and Nick's wedding Will told everyone he was the father and him and Sonny broke, but Will said he did not want to lose Sonny over this. Will saw Sonny and Brian kissing, and Sonny went back to Brian's apartment but refuse to have sex with him. Brian went to the pub to lie to Will and say they had sex. Will received a gift from Sonny on Valentine's Day, but Sonny sent it before they broke up.

Gabi went into the hospital for a baby emergency Sonny showed up to help Will. Sonny and Will went to the coffee shop were Sonny read Will's letter, and he relized that he couldn't be friend with Will because he still had feelings for him. Sonny and Will got back together and soon had sex only to get interrupted by Nick who started to blackmail Will for shooting Ej. Will signed away is parental right. Sonny explained to Will that Nick went looking for information so he could blackmail him because he was gay.

Sonny and Nick got into a fight over him blackmailing Will. Sonny soon went to Ej and ask could he help will with getting the rights to his daughter back, but he had a moral dilemma because he didn't know if he wanted revenge against Nick or to help Will.

Reception

The character of Sonny Kiriakis has been received well with critics and the audience. The Will and Sonny romance has also gain a lot of fan support and critical success, Tv Guide Magazine has said that " While it took 45 years for the show to iintroduce it first openly gay characterand (Sonny) another year and a half to find him a male partner (Will) the wait was well worth it. This steamy, star-crossed saga has had it drama to spare (Paranoia, Blackmail, Impossible Parents!), but its success lies in the fresh easy charm of these young men." The ratings are as strong as every since Will and Sonny been on. It is safe to say that Will and Sonny are one of the most popular young couples on Days of our Lives in the young characters.
