A few hundred years ago, there was a variety of alcohol-related culture in South Korea. Drink was born with the history of mankind and its culture has evolved until now. Drinking culture was closely connected with national culture, eating habits and geomorphological setting. People can understand social structure and lifestyles of the country through drinking culture that represents a nation.

South Korea’s drinking culture was originated in China. As the foreign negotiation activities became actively in Koryo Dynasty and distilled water’s culture came into Koryo, South Korea’s unique alcohol form was completed. In the Joseon Dynasty period, almost South Korea’s drinking culture was established and this culture has been going on ever since.[1]

History of South Korean drinking culture

South Korea's drinking culture has existed since a long time. Korean ancestors lived merrily every holiday seasons. When the days came, Korean ancestors gave thanks to the grace of their ancestors and shared affection with their neighbors. Times and seasons ritual of South Korea always was with alcohol. Korean ancestors enjoyed the flavors of the season drinking alcohol which made fermented drinks every important season. Important season is such as New Year, rice planting and Korean Thanksgiving day etc. Each important season had variety culture. Also Korean ancestors drank a diversity of alcohols each important season.

When a person give alcohol to adults, the person have to give alcohol with two hands respectfully. 두손으로 따르되, 한손은 병입구와 나머지 한손은 상표를 가려야되는 방법도 있고, 한손은 가슴에 한손은 상표를 잡고 따를 때도 있다.
