Brandon Stanton (born March 1, 1984) is an American photographer and blogger, most known for his photo blog, Humans of New York (HONY), started in 2010. The blog features street portraits of people in New York City, along with snippets of conversations. In October 2013, his first book, Humans of New York was released, it soon became a bestseller. Today his blog had 2.1 million followers on Facebook and around 400,000 on Tumblr.[3]

In May 2013, HONY won the 2013 Webby Award's People's Voice award in the "Best Use of Photography" category.

Early life and background

Stanton grew up in Marietta, Georgia, a suburb of Atlanta, Georgia,[3] where he completed his schooling from the The Walker School in 2002.[4] Subsequently he studied history at the University of Georgia.[5]

Career

Stanton started his career as a bond trader at Gambit Trading LLC, a Chicago-based trading firm in 2008. He worked here for the next two years, when in July 2010, he lost his job.[3][5]

Also, in early 2010, he bought a semi-professional camera, Canon EOS 7D,[6] and though he had no formal training in photography, he started taking photographs on his own in downtown Chicago in his spare time. Now in July 2010 without a job, he decided to turn his hobby into a profession and embarked upon a tour of American cities, starting with New Orleans, Pittsburgh, and then Philadelphia. Gradually along with usual city scenes he also started taking candid street portraits. When those portraits received a favourable response on his Facebook profile, he decided to pursue the genre further. Soon, he started approaching his subjects, taking permission. As a part of his tour, he reached New York City in August 2010, planning to stay only for a short while, before proceeding towards the West Coast. However, streets of New York proved an ideal setting for his style, thus every day he would walk miles through the city and post his photographs in an album, he titled "Humans of New York" on his Facebook profile. By the time, he posted Humans of New York II, and then Humans of New York III, he decided to shift to New York, with "an initial plan was to take 10,000 street portraits to plot on an interactive map, creating a photographic census of the city." [5][6][7]

Eventually his photographs were shifted to the Humans of New York Facebook page, which he started in November 2010.[7][8] In the first year, he was only taking pictures without captions, however started having conversations with his subjects and started adding small quotes as captions.[2] As the popularity of his blog grew, in mid 2012, he employed two unpaid assistants and started a Tumblr page,[6] he was also featured in Vogue in the same year.[9]

In May 2013, he took the photographs at the Facebook headquarters, taking portraits of its employees.[10] By October 2013, his blog had published nearly 6,000 photos, and had 1.6 million followers on Facebook and around 400,000 on Tumblr.[5][11]

At the 2013 Webby Awards, Humans of New York won the People's Voice award in the "Best Use of Photography" category.[12]

His first book Humans of New York book, based on his blog was released on October 15, 2013, and received good reviews.[13] Published by St. Martin's Press, the book had already sold 30,000 copies as preorders.[3] In an interview to CNN, he also talked his next release, a children's book called Little Humans, which is due for release in 2014.[2] Ahead of the release, he was also interviewed by Bill Weir, for ABC News's Nightline in a news story titled, "'Humans of New York': Photog Gone Viral"; this incidentally was also Weir's last story for the program.[14][15]

The book Humans of New York, reached number 1 position on The New York Times Non-Fiction Best Sellers of 2013 for November 3, 2013 week.[16][17] In December 2013, TIME magazine placed him in its list, "30 Under 30 World Changers".[18]

Personal life

Stanton continues to live in Bedford–Stuyvesant, Brooklyn.[2] He now uses a Canon EOS 5D Mark III and on most days takes street portraits walking through New York streets and subways, usually during the daytime or in well-lit streets, as he prefers not using a flash.[19] Besides taking photographs for his blog, Stanton also works as a commercial photographer. In 2013, he shot an ad campaign for Amtrak, which was published in the Washington Post.[3]
