I Shall Dance is a 2014 Canadian Pakistani Documentary[1] film that is written and directed by Sonia Ahmed.[2][3] It follows the story of a young man from Quetta,[4] Balouchistan in Pakistan who faced obstacles in following his passion for dance.[5] The filming of this documentary was done over a nine month period, from the development phase[6] till the post production.[7]

Plot

The story is set in Toronto, Canada where Changezi is a dancer and follows his dreams of dancing as a profession. In a country like Pakistan entertainment has always been suppressed due to religious reasons and Changezi was always a misfit because he danced and that was not allowed in his religion or culture. It is considered shameful for both men and women to dance and hence the documentary captures the various sides to Changezi.

A Shite Muslim man, Changezi's family were always the victim of the Taliban attacks on Shites in Pakistan and hence left Pakistan for a better life in Toronto, Canada. The documentary covers a good portion on the Shite Sunni clashes in Pakistan. It then moves to Quetta, Balouchistan where the good and the bad is told about the city. Some scenes of the death of Hazara people are disturbing. The film also focuses on the Hazara people and how their existence came into Pakistan, and how they are a unique set of people who are the last descendants of Genghis Khan and who are persecuted because they are Shite Muslims.

Pakistani people are asked for their opinion on the subject of dancing as well as a religious leader is interviewed from Karachi, Pakistan. The film them shows what Changezi has done in Toronto, Canada and how he is doing what he loves to do. Various dance performances are shown with an ending note to the youth of Pakistan and a message to Pakistanis in general. The story touches various topics of religious violence, religious differences, opinions of Pakistanis in general, opinions of Pakistani youth, the passion of Changezi's dance and his reason for dancing.
