In 1848, Edward G. Ryan set up a Milwaukee law practice, and later served as Chief Justice of the Wisconsin Supreme Court. Ten years later, Matthew Hale Carpenter joined Ryan to form Ryan & Carpenter. Carpenter later became a United States Senator and was called the Webster of the West. Most recently in 2001, the Milwaukee-based firm merged with Chicago's Schwartz & Freeman.
