Essie Weingarten in October 2012

Essie Weingarten is the president and founder of Essie Cosmetics, Ltd.[1] The company was sold to L'Oreal in 2010.[2]

Essie Weingarten, born in 1949, began her career in the cosmetics industry in 1981 when she premiered 12 unconventional nail polish colors in Las Vegas, Nevada. It was extremely successful and she began distributing her polishes to various salons across the country. In 1982, Essie expanded the company internationally to distributors in countries such as Japan, France, and England. Essie's nail polish has been seen on many famous persons, including HRH Queen Elizabeth II. In fact, according to Essie's website, the Queen's hairdresser wrote to Essie Weingarten in 1989, requesting a bottle of Ballet Slippers nail polish, which she said was the only color the Queen would wear.

In the early 1990s, the collection grew to 200 shades. Today, the company sells over 300 different colors, textured polishes, nail treatments, nail care products, and pre-cured UV appliqués, expanding the collection seasonally. In 2014, the Essie Spa collection was released exclusively in Target stores, consisting of various manicure and pedicure treatments.[3]

Essie has partnered with companies such as J. Crew, Rock and Republic, New York Fashion Week, Judith Ripka and Then and Now to create unique shades of nail polish.[4][5]
