Open Root Server Network (ORSN) is a network of root nameservers for the Internet. It operated from February 2002 until the end of 2008. On 2008/10/23, ORSN announced the project would be shut down by 2008-12-31 00:00 (UTC) until June 2013.[1] ORSN operates again since June 2013.[2]

Its root zone information is normally kept in synchronization with that of the network coordinated by ICANN. The networks are thus compatible, although ORSN is operated independently from ICANN. The ORSN servers are primarily placed in Europe.

The founders of ORSN are concerned that ICANN is ultimately controlled by the government of the United States. Their aim is to limit the control over the Internet that this gives, while ensuring that domain names remain unambiguous. They also expect their network to make domain name resolutions faster for everyone.

Several Internet service providers in Europe used ORSN as a root for their name servers.[citation needed] There are also public name servers that use ORSN.

ORSN has 2 operating modes: ICANN BASED (default) and INDEPENDENT. ICANN BASED operating mode involves daily synchronization, except that removed TLDs are not removed from the ORSN root. INDEPENDENT mode has no automatic synchronization and is activated "whenever the political situation of the world - in our opinion - makes this step necessary because the possibility of a modification and/or a downtime of the ICANN root zone exists or we do not want that our root zone will rebuild automatically."[3]

ORSN Public DNS Servers

Our Public DNS Servers are provided by the community of ORSN. All servers are free for use. This DNS servers are an alternate option for users that don't have a ORSN-Ready server or in the case that the local ISP doesn't support the use of our network. All registered servers will be checked every day for availability and the right functionality in the ORSN root server environment.[6]
