Ottaal, a 2015 Malayalam film directed by Jayaraj, is an adaptation of the short story Vanka by Russian writer Anton Chekhov.[1] It is set to become the first movie in India to be released online on the same day as it's theatrical release.[2] The stars of the film are first-timers Ashanth K Sha and Kumarakom Vasudevan and the experienced young hand of Shine Tom Chacko.[3] The film was one of the four Malayalam films that were selected to the Indian Panorama to be screened at the International Film Festival of India to be held in Goa in November 2015.[4]

Plot

This film tells the story of a young boy and his attachment to his grandfather, his only relative in the world. While Ashanth K Sha is the male protagonist, actor debutant Kumarakom Vasudevan plays the grandfather. Kumarakom Vasudevan, in real life is a fisherman and Jayaraj the Director found him during his hunt for actors to play the role. Shine Tom Chacko’s character, called Mesthri, also has a pivotal role in the story.[5]
