FN-2199, referred to as "Nines" in the Expanded Universe, is a minor character in Star Wars: The Force Awakens and a tertiary antagonist to Finn (Star Wars) [citation needed]. He is depicted as a loyal First Order (Star Wars) Stormtrooper who served in the decades following the end of the Galactic Civil War and an enforcer tasked with dispatching those who defect. Though he was physically portrayed by Liang Yang, he is voiced by David Accord, a sound editor for Skywalker Sound [citation needed].

Fictional Biography

FN-2199 served in the First Order in the decades after the Galactic Civil War. Training in the FN Corps alongside FN-2000 ("Zeroes"), FN-2003 ("Slip"), and FN-2187 ("Eight-Seven"), he adopted the nickname "Nines" because of his fondness for it. They trained under Captain Phasma, practicing in simulated combat for most of their lives. During their first deployment, FN Corps was brought to a facility in Pressy's Tumble, an asteroid field, and ordered to neutralize the workers, who were striking. Initially reluctant, Nines complied once Slip and Zeroes opened fire.[1]

During the conflict between the First Order and the Resistance, Kylo Ren sought part of a map that led to Jedi Master Luke Skywalker, who had vanished years earlier. The map was held by the astromech droid BB-8, who the First Order tracked to the castle of the pirate Maz Kanata on the planet Takodana. Nines was one of many First Order soldiers who were deployed to follow Ren to Takodana and assault the castle. During the ensuing battle, Nines encountered FN-2187—then known as "Finn"—who had defected from the First Order and was aiding Han Solo and Rey in an effort to transport BB-8 to the Resistance. Nines fought against Finn, who wielded a Jedi lightsaber, by utilizing a Z6 riot control baton. Nines gained the upper hand against Finn in single combat and nearly struck a blow against the defector, but was shot by Han Solo, who used Chewbacca's bowcaster, thus ending the fight and wounding FN-2199.[2]

Internet Popularity

Shortly following the release of Star Wars: The Force Awakens, FN-2199 became an internet sensation and had his likeness utilized in numerous memes. The scene in which he brands Finn a traitor led to fans unofficially dubbing him "TR-8R", a comedic reference to the alphanumeric abbreviations used to identify Stormtroopers.[3]
