Gensho is the twenty-third studio album by Japanese rock band Boris, made in collaboration with noise artist and frequent collaborator Merzbow. It was first announced via Relapse Records' promotional website[1] in January. It is presented in two parts, divided according to the contributions of each artist; disc 1 presents several Boris classics and a My Bloody Valentine cover in drone-based, drumless style, while disc 2 consists solely of Merzbow's accompaniment. They are intended to be played at the same time, much like the two discs of previous Boris release Dronevil. As such, its vinyl form can be purchased as a whole or in two parts, each part a double LP with half the Boris material on one record and half the Merzbow material on the other. Thus, no matter which form is purchased, it is possible to play both contributors simultaneously.[2]
The original idea was created when the two artists joined for a drone-based set in June 2014 for Boiler Room. Following this to its conclusion, the Japanese edition through Daymare Recordings includes a bonus double CD of their collective performance on November 27, 2015. It includes the recorded debut of new Boris song "More" as well as a performance of rare song "Kilmister," created for the web anime series Ninja Slayer.[3]
