Father Connolly was schooled at the Abbey Grammar in Newry taking A-levels in French, Spanish and English before commencing his studies for the priesthood in Maynooth in 1980. There he attained achieved a B.A. in French and philosophy at St Patrick's College, Maynooth and then studied theology and was ordained in June 1987. Almost immediately he was sent to Rome for postgraduate studies by Bishop Francis Brooks and in 1991 he completed Doctoral Studies in moral theology at the Pontifical Gregorian University, Rome in 1991.
He then embarked on a steady progress through the administrative rather than the pastoral side of the Church. He was Executive Secretary of the Irish Catholic Bishops' Conference from 1991 to 1997 and while in that role he prepared his doctoral work or publication, which became the Irish Penitentials in 1995. and in 2002 published the volume Sin in the "New Century Theology" series.
He was appointed Lecturer in Moral Theology at the Pontifical University, Maynooth in October 1997 and again steadily, if unspectacularly climbed the administrative ladder viz. Registrar (2001–2006), Professor of Moral Theology [2007] and Vice-President (1999–2007) of St Patrick's College, Maynooth, Ireland. He taught courses in Faith and Human Rights, Christian Marriage and Human Sexuality, Sin and Repentance, Virtue Ethics and Discipleship and Pastoral Ethics and was always considered a thoroughly prepared lecturer,
On 10 August 2007, the Trustees of St Patrick's College, Maynooth, announced the appointment of Father Connolly as President of the College.[1] He was subsequently appointed Chaplain to the Pope and given the title Monsignor in December 2007. He was reappointed for a second term on 29 May 2012 at the summer meeting of the College Trustees.[2]
His time as President of St. Patrick's College, Maynooth has not been without controversy. The election of Joseph Ratzinger as Pope led to a discernible rise in the conservatism of seminarians and after the convulsions the Catholic Church in Ireland suffered as a result of the mishandling of the child sex abuse allegations, the College was subject to an Apostolic Visitation. There were ill-informed reports at the time that Cardinal Timothy Dolan would recommend the closure of Maynooth and at the time Monsignor Connolly responded vigorously "Media reports today about the possible closure of the seminary are without foundation. The media outlet leading with this incorrect story was sent a reply from us yesterday and its absence from the published copy is disappointing and damaging" [3]
Even several years after the 2010 visitation by Cardinal Dolan there were reports that all was far from well in Maynooth.[4]
Connolly's perceived closeness to Cardinal Sean Brady may well have cost him the opportunity to serve the church as a bishop/
