Patrick Courrielche is an American entrepreneur, marketer, op-ed writer, and arts advocate known for pioneering the Pop-up retail trend.[1][2] He has written articles for and appeared on a variety of media outlets.[3][4][5][6] His arts advocacy led to the White House issuing new guidelines on how federal grant making agencies interact with grantees.[7]
Career
After working as an applied physicist for aerospace firm TRW Inc., in 1997 Courrielche started the Ritual Expo, which at the time was dubbed the "ultimate hipster mall" but would later come to be known as the first pop-up retail store.[8][9][10] Courrielche started this new marketing trend with hard-to-find youth clothing manufacturers, and eventually sold the Ritual Expo to the creators of Lollapalooza and began working with Levi Strauss, AT&T, and Motorola to execute pop-up retail stores that featured their products along-side smaller fashion brands and artworks by Shepard Fairey and Dave Kinsey.[2][11][12]
In 1998, Courrielche started a lifestyle marketing & PR firm and began work with Toyota launching it's new youth brand Scion - highlighted as "the most successful automotive brand launch in the history of the auto industry of North America." He handled Scion's public relations and promotions, created and produced several branded-entertainment films, including a docudrama featuring Questlove from The Roots and a short-film featuring Biz Markie, and helped create and launch Scion Audio/Visual - one of the first brand-funded record labels. [13][14][15][16]
He wrote an op-ed critical of the White House using the National Endowment for the Arts to promote proposed federal legislation.[17] After public and congressional pressure grew as a result of the article, the White House issued a statement acknowledging regrets and issued new guidelines on how federal grant making agencies interact with grantees.[18][19][20]
Along with his wife and business partner Adryana Cortez, Courrielche created, produced, and wrote a semi-scripted series of global warming debates moderated by comedians Sarah Silverman, Andy Samberg, Jamie Kennedy, Tracy Morgan, and singer Mark McGrath. [21][22]
He also created the first luxury automotive publicity campaign featuring a gay married couple, Simon Doonan and Jonathan Adler.[23][24]
Personal life
Courrielche graduated from UCLA in 1996 with a Masters of Science degree in applied physics. He married entrepreneur and creative director Adryana Cortez and lives with her and his daughter in Los Angeles.[25]
