Bridges Ventures (or Bridges) is a fund manager that specialises in sustainable and impact investing. It invests in business, properties and social sector organisations that work to address long-term societal challenges, with a focus on four impact themes: health and well-being,[1][2] education[3] and skills,[4] sustainable living and under-served markets.[5][6][7]

Bridges has almost £600m in funds under management across its Sustainable Growth, Property and Social Sector Funds. It is part-owned by the Bridges Charitable Trust.[8]

History

Bridges was founded in 2002 by Michele Giddens,[9] Philip Newborough and Sir Ronald Cohen.[10][11]

Originally called Bridges Community Ventures, Bridges was founded following the recommendations of the Social Investment Task Force,[12] which was established by the UK government in 2000.[13]

Bridges has an advisory arm, Bridges Impact+. It has a dual function: to maximise the social and environmental impact of Bridges’ own investments, and to work with external clients on projects that help to develop the sustainable and impact investing market as a whole.[14]

Bridges Impact+ also runs an educational programme in partnership with the Wharton School of Business’s Social Impact Initiative called MBA Impact Investing Networking & Training (MIINT).[15] The programme takes place annually and has historically included US graduate schools.[16] Social enterprises represented by the winning team are ultimately awarded a seed investment.[17][18][19]

The Bridges Charitable Trust operates as the firm’s philanthropic arm, making strategic grants in areas where investable solutions are not available. It is funded by the Bridges team, who donate the equivalent of 10% of their profits from the firm’s other funds.[20]
