Megalia (Korean: 메갈리아) is a website based in South Korea, created in 2015.

Overview

In the spring of 2015, DC Inside, a South Korean Internet forum, created a new forum page named "MERS Gallery". The page was made for the purpose of sharing information regarding Middle East respiratory syndrome. However, a few days after, a sudden influx of many new feminist users into the MERS Gallery occurred. For this reason, the board became covered with posts containing message expressing disdain for men. As time progressed, the DC Inside administration intervened, warning the users to use polite language. The users, however, complained about the language policy sanction by the administrations. In the end, they left the DC Inside forum and launched their own website, "Megalia". The name is derived from the Gerd Brantenberg's Novel Egalia's Daughters and DC Inside's MERS Gallery.[2][3]

Culture

In Megalia, there are several boards, including the "best" board, "new posts" board, "Menyeom" (meaning suitable for Megalia) board, "news" board, "data" board, "lecture" board, "capture" board, "humor" board, and "free" board.[4]

  • 한남충 (Han-nam-chung): 한국(Korean)+남자(Man)+충(蟲)(bugs). Noun. Literally means "Korean man bug" They use this term to despise Korean men.
  • 재기 (Jae-gi): Verb. A slang derived from an accident in which a Korean anti-feminist named 성재기 (Seong Jae Gi) showed himself to public jumping into the Han River from a bridge for the sake of receiving donations from his supporters, disappeared as the water was too dark and tide too fast, and was seen drown by the rescue team. Megalians use this term to refer to "Commit suicide by jumping into the Han River." This term is usually spoken to men.
  • 애비충 (Ae-bi-chung): 애비(dad)+충(蟲)(bugs). Noun. Literally means "dad bug". At first, this term was coined to counter the misusage of a slang "Mom-chung" (literally means mom bug). A term referring to mothers who only care about their children, not apologizing to others even when their children offend them). However, nowadays this term is used when Megalians mention their father.
  • 6.9: Noun, adverb. This slang is used to mock Korean men, making fun that the length of their penis size when erected is only 6.9cm. However according to a research from Seoul National University, the average length of Korean male genitals when erected is 12.11 cm.[11]

Criticisms

  • In October 2015, Megalia flamed EBS Online lecture teacher Lee-daji (이다지) due to her remarks that "A woman should do the obligation for obtain the rights.". Megalia didn't agree what she said, so they attacked her.[12]
  • In November 2015, a Megalian was sued by the Korean web cartoonist MindC for saying she got raped by him which was false (proven by korean police). she was sued by him and Criminal procedure was proceeded by Korean government. webtoonist MindC went through tough time because of this false accusations. MindC later sued her. The EJB police department later reported that "she did that because she wanted to get attention." and the woman was found guilty. pic was taken by the victim MindC.[13] she didn't even apologize to MindC. Megalia later began a fundraiser to support the woman. They started fundraiser to support the criminal in the name of "feminism"[14][15][16]
  • In January 2016, a Pre-K teacher posted comments on Megalian about how she wanted to rape a young boy.[17]

Derived site

Womad

"Womad"(korean:워마드) is a website derived from Megalia in January 22, 2016.[18]

In July 2016, there were many murder certification posts uploaded to Womad. Many members of Womad claimed they had poisoned men by putting antifreeze in coffee. On July 28, Korean Police began an investigation into Womad.[19]

Megalia 4

"Megalia 4" is a Facebook page that derived from Megalia in 2016.

Megalia 4 had made a T-shirt bearing the phrase "Girls do not need a prince". On Monday, Jayeon Kim (김자연), a South Korean voice actress, posted a selfie on Twitter wearing that T-shirt. In some reports, although it is known "Jayeon Kim, a voice actress who worked for PC game company Nexon, She was fired from Nexon. because only reason that she wearing the Feminism T-shirt",[20][21][22] But this is in fact wrong. In fact, Jayeon Kim was not employee of Nexon, she just providing the voice of 'Tina' (티나, a Character of video game Closers). She was not 'fired' from Nexon, basically she was not a Nexon employee. Nexon instead had another voice actress voice Tina, after Jayeon Kim agreed. Nexon stated: "김자연 성우와 원만한 합의 하에 결정된 사항이다. 계약된 보이스 녹음 비용은 모두 지불됐으며, 사용만 하지 않는 것, 이번 업데이트에 사용되는 캐릭터 보이스는 모두 녹음됐기 때문에 추가로 녹음을 진행하거나 별도의 비용이 발생하지 않는다. 이번 사태로 김자연 성우가 일자리를 잃었다는 주장은 왜곡된 부분이다"(Replacement Tina's voice was conducted through an amicable agreement between Nexon and Jayeon Kim. We had already paid for that all contract voice recordings money to her, voice recordings are all finished already, there is no more new voice recording. But we just not using her voice in game. So she did not lose her's jobs or had monetary damages.)[23]

On July 31, 2016, Margaret Qualley defended Jayeon Kim and Megalia in an Instagram post.[24][25] As a result, her remarks became the subject of controversy in South Korea.[26]
