The South Korean boy band Sechs Kies has released six studio albums, two compilation albums, one live album, one musical album and several singles.
SechsKies was created by DSP Media and debuted in 1997 with the album School Byeolgok (Korean: 학원별곡). Under DSP media, SechsKies released five full-length studio albums, two compilation albums, one live album and one musical album. On May 18, 2000, SechsKies held a sudden press conference announcing their official departure as a group from the music scene.[1] SechsKies's final performance was at the Dream Concert on May 20, 2000.[2] In August of that year, the members of SechsKies self-released one final track and music video titled "Thanks" for their fans, which was uploaded online.[3]
On August 2000, DSP was investigated by the police for allegations of tax evasion, embezzlement and unequal contracts.[4] DSP was cleared of suspicion except tax evasion by under-reporting the physical sales of albums. The National Tax Service conducted a tax audit of the corporation, and collected an additional hundreds of millions of won from it.
The physical sales of SechsKies' albums remain unclear not only because of DSP's under-reporting but also because the official records do not exist for the first two albums. The Recording Industry Association of Korea (hereafter, RIAK)'s official website currently only shows album sales data from year 1999.[5] 한국영상음반협회 (The Korea Video Record Association), which preceded RIAK, had only announced physical album sales records from September 1998.[6] Therefore, currently there are no official records for the physical sales of School Byeolgok (학원별곡) and Welcome To The Sechskies Land. For these two albums, we can only estimate the album sales from newspaper articles.
The physical album sales for the first album, School Byeolgok (학원별곡), was 600,000 according to newspaper articles.[7][8] The second album, Welcome To The Sechskies Land, sold 700,000 copies.[9][10][11] In 2012, the former manager of SechsKies stated that their debut album sold between 1.7 and 1.8 million copies, but this may be a combined figure for the first two albums.[12] The third album, Road Fighter, has two separate records. The official record reported by 한국영상음반협회 (The Korea Video Record Association) is 226,569.[13] In contrast, a news report reveals that SechsKies' third album sold more than 700,000 copies.[14] The official sales record for SechsKies' biggest hit, Special Album, is 305,307.[15] As this was the most successful album of SechsKies, this official record seems to be a result of under-reporting. The discrepancy between official and estimated album sales is also great for the fourth album, Com’Back. The official record is merely 350,128.[16] However, according to news articles, Com’Back seems to have sold for more than 700,000 copies.[17]
In 2016, the group held a reunion concert on April because of Infinite Challenge.[18] On May 11, YG Entertainment officially announced that they signed a contract with SechsKies (Eun Jiwon, Lee Jaijin, Kim Jaeduck, Kang Sunghun, and Jang Suwon).[19] On October 7, SechsKies released their new digital single "Three Words (세 단어)" after 16 years. The single topped all 8 Korean major music charts shortly after release, achieving all-kill status. It also ranked high in Asian music charts and iTunes charts in Taiwan, Hong Kong, Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand and others.[20] On December 1, SechsKies released "Re-ALBUM" which contains 10 past hit songs of SechsKies that were rearranged and remastered by YG producers, and is prepared a special gift for fans.[21]
