On 18 May 2017 a car crashed into Times Square in New York City. One person was killed and at least 20 were injured.[1] The suspect is said to be from The Bronx with a history of driving under the influence.[2]

Incident

The driver of a maroon 2009 Honda Accord sped into pedestrians in Times Square after having jumped the sidewalk on the west side of Seventh Avenue at 42nd Street, continuing for three blocks before crashing at the northwest corner of 45th Street and Broadway.[3][4] As the driver was trying to flee from his car, a traffic agent tackled him and took him into custody.[4]

Victims

An 18-year-old woman has died as a result of the incident and 22 people are injured.[3]

Suspect

Richard Rojas (born 1991), a 26-year-old resident of The Bronx and a military veteran, was arrested after the crash. Rojas previously served in the United States Navy and had two prior arrests for driving under the influence.[5] These arrests came in 2008 and 2015.[3]

Investigation

Bill de Blasio, the Mayor of New York City, and other officials have said there is no indication the incident was act of terrorism.[3]
