Mahato or Mahto is a Hindu caste surname used mainly by the kushwaha of the Bihar and kudumi communities of Chota Nagpur Plateau. Kudumi Mahto(Oraon tribes) is a bit lower class than koery Mahto (Kushwaha,Maurya,shakya,Saini).

Koiry Mahto the name originated from the Name of Emperor Chandragupta Maurya's Father was Koir. On the name of his father Koir this caste is divided in Koiri and Murai (People belonging to mother of Chandragupta Maurya. Chandragupta Maurya's mother Mura). King Koir was the last king of Pippalivan. Kingdom which was situated at Nepal foothills. Another ethnologist, William Crooke, wrote, the Koeri believe that they are the descendents of Kush, one of the twin sons of the much-revered Hindu god Rama. This deity, whose life story is detailed in the immensely popular and ancient Hindu epic, the Ramayana, was the divine king of Ayodhya in present-day eastern Uttar Pradesh. He is worshipped as the seventh incarnation of Vishnu, the Preserver in the Hindu trinity. He is also regarded as an unparalleled icon of moral uprightness.
