On October 31, 2017, a flatbed pickup truck was driven into pedestrians along West Street in Lower Manhattan, New York City, causing at least eight deaths and multiple injuries. Reportedly shouted the phrase "Allahu Akbar" according to witnesses. The driver was shot by police and arrested. The attack is being investigated as a radical islamic terrorist attack and a Joint Terrorism Task Force is involved.[2]
Attack
At around 3:05 p.m. EDT on October 31, 2017, a man named Sayfullo Saipov (29) driving a rented flatbed pickup truck from New Jersey painted as a Home Depot truck swerved into the segregated bike lane of West Street in Lower Manhattan.[3] Entering the bike lane from Houston Street, the driver ran over multiple pedestrians in the Hudson River Park bikeway, mainly bike riders, causing at least eight fatalities and fifteen injuries.[1][4][5] The driver came to a stop at Chambers Street after colliding with a school bus. He reportedly left the truck with fake guns. Law enforcement officers said that he shouted "Allahu Akbar" as he stepped out of the vehicle.[1] The suspect was shot by New York City Police Department officers and taken into custody and medical care.[6][7][8]
Suspect
The police named the suspect as 29-year-old Sayfullo Saipov, a citizen of Uzbekistan and resident of Tampa, Florida.[9]
Aftermath
Stuyvesant High School was placed on lockdown after reports of shots were heard nearby. Several nearby streets were also closed.[1]
