Joëlle Jones

Joëlle Jones is an American comic book artist. She is best known for creating Lady Killer, a series published in 2015–2017 by Dark Horse Comics.[1]

Jones was born in 1980 in Boise, Idaho and grew up there.[2] She attended the Pacific Northwest College of Art to study oil painting.[3][4] She left school to pursue comic book illustration.[5] She stayed in the Portland, Oregon area for several years, where she worked as a freelance artist for Dark Horse Comics and Oni Press (both of which are based in the Portland area).[6]

Career

2006-2016

Jones's professional career began when some of her illustrations were published by Dark Horse Comics in 2006.[7]

Early in her career, Jones worked frequently with Jamie S. Rich. They collaborated on several titles published by Oni Press, such as 12 Reasons Why I Love Her(2006)[8], You Have Killed Me (2009)[9], and Spell Checkers (2010-2013)[10][11][12]. She continued to work with Oni Press on Brides of Helheim in 2014 and 2015.[13]

In July 2014, Dark Horse Comics announced that it would publish Lady Killer. Jones illustrated and co-wrote the title with Rich. The series is about a 1960s housewife who moonlights as an assassin. The Jones-Rich arc had five issues, which were later collected in trade paperback form.[14] At the 2016 Eisner Awards, Lady Killer was nominated for Best Limited Series, and Jones received nominations for Best Penciller/Inker as well as Best Cover Artist.[15]

In 2015 and 2016, Jones illustrated and sometimes drew covers for several issues of Marvel's Mockingbird, Spider-Woman, Scarlet Witch, and Ms. Marvel.[16]

Jones illustrated and wrote (solo this time) a second Lady Killer arc of five issues.[17] These five issues were published in 2016 and 2017; they will be available in trade paperback form, too.[18] In September 2017, Jones's Lady Killer-style artwork was used as part of the runway backdrop at Prada's spring 2018 exhibition in Milan.[19][20]

DC Comics: 2016-present

Jones had worked as a freelance artist for DC as far back as 2013.[21] Her art also appeared in titles published by Vertigo Comics.[22] She participated in DC's Talent Development Workshop in the Spring of 2016 (as a writer).[23] In July 2016, DC announced that she would begin working exclusively for the publisher.[24] She has mentioned that her exclusivity contract with DC is for three years.[25]

In late 2016, Jones's work was featured in New Talent Showcase 2016 #1.[26] Between 2016 and 2017, Jones illustrated the four-part series Supergirl: Being Super written by Mariko Tamaki and published by DC Entertainment.[27] On 30 March, 2017, DC announced that her artwork would be used as the basis for a new series of statues in their Cover Girls line.[28]

In July 2017, DC announced that Jones would draw both the covers and interior art of Batman, starting with Issue 33.[29] Jones's run begins after Catwoman (aka Selina Kyle) has accepted Batman's marriage proposal. The two travel to Kahndaq in order to meet with Holly Robinson, but they face resistance from Talia al Ghul.[30][31]
