Association of Occupational Health Professionals in Healthcare (AOHP)
About AOHP
AOHP, the Association of Occupational Health Professionals in Healthcare, is an interprofessional association dedicated to the health, safety and well-being of healthcare workers and it is the only national professional organization with the exclusive mission of addressing the needs and concerns of occupational health professionals (OHP) in healthcare settings.[1] AOHP supports the utilization of a designated occupational health professional in hospitals, clinics, home health agencies, long-term care facilities and other setting in which healthcare personnel (HCP) are employed.[2]
Vision
AOHP will be internationally recognized as the leading resource provider for the occupational health professional in healthcare.
Mission
AOHP will provide essential tools that empower members to ensure the health, safety and wellbeing of healthcare workers.
History
Although the health and safety needs of healthcare personnel (HCP) are similar in many respects to workers at large, HCP face a unique set of hazards. These unique hazards were the basis for the founding of the local Association of Hospital Employee Health Professionals (AHEHP) in Northern California in 1981. In 1983, the AHEHP was incorporated and became a national organization.[3] In 1994, AHEHP became the Association of Occupational Health Professionals in Healthcare (AOHP) to more accurately reflect the mission and vision of the organization.
Alliances, Partnerships and Collaboration
AOHP now works on a national level to advance the health, safety and well-being of health professionals (HCP) through ongoing collaborative relationships with the Occupational Safety and Health Administration OSHA,[4] the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH),[5][6][7][8][9] The Joint Commission (TJC) and organizations such as the Association of periOperative Registered Nurses (AORN) and the American Association of Occupational Health Nurses (AAOHN). Internationally, AOHP has partnered with the Japan Infection Control Association (JICSA) to share knowledge and best practices.[10][11] These partnerships have enabled AOHP to address healthcare hazards such as exposures to blood/body fluids[12][13][14][15] and airborne exposures requiring respiratory protection[16] through research and education.
