The Rwanda Standard Gauge Railway is a railway system, under development, linking the country to the neighboring countries of Tanzania and Uganda. The system is expected to link, in the future, to Rwanda's two other neighbors, Burundi and the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Through Uganda, the SGR will allow, faster access to the Kenyan port of Mombasa, Rwanda's primary access to the oceans. With no previously existing railway network, Rwanda is developing its railway system from scratch.[1]

Location

The railway system would consist of several major sections:

Rusumo–Kigali Section

This section, measuring 150 kilometres (93 mi), is part of the Isaka–Kigali Standard Gauge Railway, a joint railway between the governments of Rwanda and Tanzania,[2] that is scheduled for construction, beginning in October 2018, at a budgeted cost of US$847 million.[3]

Kigali–Gisenyi Section

When the SGR reaches Kigali, the governments of Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of the Congo are expected to work out the modalities for the extension of this ail system to DRCongo territory.

This section was also contracted to the consortium that is

Kigali–Bugesera Airport–Nemba Section

This section, measuring 435 kilometres (270 mi), stretching from Makutupora, in Dodoma, through Tabora to Isaka, is yet to be be awarded to a contractor, as of September 2018.[3]

Kagitumba–Kigali Section

This section, measuring approximately 220 kilometres (137 mi), takes the SGR line to the city of Mwanza, on the southern shores of Lake Victoria.[4] This section, has not been assigned to a contractor, as of September 2018.[3]

Overview

This 1435 mm (4 ft 8+12 in) railway line is intended to ease the transfer of goods between the ports of Dar es Salaam and Mombasa, to Kigali in Rwanda and subsequently to Bujumbura in Burundi, and to Goma, in the Democratic Republic of the Congo.
