The cucumber fish, Paraulopus nigripinnis, is a grinner of the genus Paraulopus, found around southern Australia and New Zealand on the continental shelf, at depths of between 80 and 600 m. Their length is between 15 and 20 cm.
The cucumber fish is an elongated cigar-shaped fish with large green eyes angled to look upward as well as sidewards. The first dorsal fin is high and tipped with black, and the second is small and adipose. The deeply forked tail is also tipped with black.
Cucumber fish are a pale green above and silvery below. It derives its name from the strange cucumber-like smell it emits.
