Grace Millane (2 December 1996 – 1 or 2 December 2018)[1][2][3] was a British tourist whose disappearance in New Zealand in December 2018 received international attention. Following the discovery of her remains in Auckland on 9 December, a man was charged with her murder.

Personal life

Grace Millane was born in Essex, England; her father David Millane is a property developer.[4] She attended Brentwood Ursuline Convent High School from 2008 to 2013 and St Thomas More Sixth Form from 2013 to 2015,[5] and graduated from the University of Lincoln[1] with a bachelor's degree in marketing and advertising.[3]

Last movements

Millane entered New Zealand on 20 November 2018 and travelled around the upper North Island.[6] She was on a two-week stay in New Zealand after spending six weeks in South America.[1] She arrived in Auckland on 30 November.[6] At 9:00 pm on 1 December, she was seen on Victoria Street in Auckland's CBD, and 15 minutes later she was seen via CCTV at SkyCity. She was last seen at 9:41 pm at the CityLife Hotel on Queen Street with a man now under suspicion for her murder.[1][2]

Investigation

Her parents became concerned after she did not reply to birthday wishes they sent her on 2 December.[2] Police started investigating after Millane was reported missing by her parents on 5 December.[1] The hotel she was staying at reported that she did not go back to her room on 1 December.[2]

Police initially said that there was "no evidence of foul play", but later gathered evidence that she was "no longer alive".[2] Police announced on 8 December that they were treating the case as a homicide investigation, and her body was found on 9 December at around 4 pm, 10 metres (33 ft) away from the road, in an area of forest in the Waitakere Ranges around 19 km (12 mi) west of central Auckland.[1] A post-mortem examination was done on 10 December but the results are yet to be announced. Further investigations of the area where Millane was found are set to be carried out on 11 December.[7]

Suspect

A 26-year-old man was taken into custody on 8 December at 3 pm[1] and later appeared in court on 10 December 2018 charged with Millane's murder.[8] Justice Evangelos Thomas denied him name suppression, but this was appealed by the defence, so interim name suppression was ordered, making it illegal for New Zealand media outlets or private citizens to publish his name. Many international media organizations, particularly in the United Kingdom, chose to ignore this restriction. He was staying at the CityLife Hotel in central Auckland,[1] and had commented on a Facebook post of Millane's shortly before she was last seen.[9] He will next appear in court on 23 January 2019.

Reactions

Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern made a public apology to the family of Millane on 10 December, saying "on behalf of New Zealand, I want to apologise. Your daughter should have been safe here, and she wasn't".[8]

The University of Lincoln, where Millane studied, said that its community was "deeply saddened" by her death.[1]

Auckland's Sky Tower and Harbour Bridge will be lit up in a white ribbon shape from 10 to 13 December to commemorate her death.[10]

Vigils will be held on 12 December at 6pm and 7pm in St Patrick's Square and Federal Street.[10]
